I was cruising around musicfriend today and I saw this guitar at the top of the best sellers list.

Does anyones have the scoop on this guitar? 800 for a les paul with burstbuckers seems to be a steal. Is gibson just dumping all their extra wood into a limited edition run, or is this guitar here to stay?

Limited run.

It's very very cool. All mahogony Paul + burstbuckers = killer, unique tone. More mellow and chimey. If if had an ebony board you'd see me owning one by now.

They made it cheap so everyone is eager to go out and buy it all at once.

I played one of the first one of these made (I work at musicians friend) This things is pretty f*ckin sweet. I wouldn't buy it as it is probably the heaviest guitar I've ever picked up.

that and I've made the decision not to buy another guitar till I'm 30. (that's 9 more years.)

It's not the first time they've made those guitars. They used to be called "The Pauls"...

To be fair, that guitar is totally different to a "The Paul."

It's different from the first The Pauls (I have one of these), but look into the more recent The Pauls (I think they were called The Paul II) that came out in the 90s.

Hmmm... TPII didn't have the carve top, right? I can't remember. The first ones were walnut, I really can't remember the second ones at all.

It's a fair bit more upscale than either of those models - the Burstbuckers for a start! And I'm sure it's the only all-mahog Paul you can get for sub $1800 these days. Decent inlays and stuff, too.

You know, I really want one, I just want an ebony board.

Really want one.

I think the Paul II had a carved top, but I'm not sure. It was all mahogony, that I'm sure about. My old early 80's The Paul (it's a The Paul Firebrand Deluxe) is all mahogany (Deluxe model), and I think it has an ebony fretboard. Not sure, though...

The original The Pauls did not have a carved top. I was thinking about getting one but I got an invader instead. I'm about 90% sure it was not carved top.

I think it's the Les Paul sound and the Gibson name but without the flashy looks (multi-colour options and pearl trapezoid inlays).

I think.

If that's true, it's perfectly o.k. with me!

The original The Paul (the one in the 80's) was made out of Walnut, not mahogany. Same thing with The SG, The ES-335 Firebrand and The V.

Not all 80s The Pauls were made of walnut. I have a 1981 The Paul Deluxe, and it's made of mahogany. The Deluxe models of the "The Paul" and "The SG" were made of mahogany. The standard models were made of walnut. Dig?

I think it refers to the gold to black sunburst painted on the guitar or something like that.

The original "The Pauls" were made out of walnut, and they are slightly thinner than standards. While not carved, they do have some very shallow contour bevels. Also, the pickup selector switch is in a different place, near the knobs (instead of the upper bout). The one I played had open coils and no pickguard.

Later deluxes/firebrands were similar, but were made out of mahogany.

The Paul II (discontinued in 98) and the Paul SL (99) were both made of mahogany and had carved tops. The pickup selector switch was returned to the upper bout. They were still slightly thinner than standards.

The basic design of the Paul II/SL lived on in the Smartwood Exotics line.

This guitar could be interesting. Is this guitar considered a step up or down from a Studio?

It IS a Studio. The "Vintage Mahogany" title comes from an earlier model Les Paul that had the mahogany body AND mahogany top, instead of the usual mahogany body, maple top. And the finish is a "vintage cherry" finish. I guess thats where they get the name. I bought one in Feb or March of this year. The Burstbucker Pro pickups are killer.

it looks to me like the les paul studio equivelant to the faded SG's and flying V.

and i want it

Well, it IS a LP without binding, but the Studios have a maple top and 490R/498T pickups, so it's not really the same thing. I'd say it's a step up.
