Everbody plays covers. Jokes. Serious. Misc.
What are your proudest covers and most regretted covers?
Mine are:
Greatest: I have just finished aranging T.A.TU's 'All the things she said'. Sonic Youth and Trent Reznor go pop.
Most regretted: 'How You Remind Me' a joke cover. Continually requested ever after. Never again.

My cover of Pink Floyd's "Is There Anybody Out There?" is probably my best work. I always thought that the nylon string guitar didn't fit the song, so I played it with my Martin steel string electro-acoustic through a Small Clone chorus and into a Fender amp with the reverb turned up. Soon, I'm re-recording it and adding a midi string arrangement.

best:
open mic night at a coffee shop, radiohead's karma police with my acoustic.
worst:
first gig with band, ill-fated cover of U2's "with or without you" a combination of a horrible place to gig and just poor playing.

Best:
None :)
Worse:
This whole 20 minute track of my first bands cd, we all kept going to random insturments playing horrible music... Nickleback, New Found Glory, Vanilla Ice(actually that was pretty good:D ) Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park... man that track was such a mistake :)

Oh yes, and worst..."Blackbird" at a solo acoustic gig. I was really nervous and my hands were trembling throughout the entire set, so I really screwed up the fingerpicking on that song. On top of that, my voice was really shaky, and I completely backed off on the "Into the light of a dark black night" lyric. It was just awful.

Ah.... I hate blackbird, I had to play it for a playing test in guitar class... the rhythm of it's confusing at hell at first... it's not so bad now I guess
Best: Guttermouth - Lipstick
Lots of people said they preferred it to the original :-)
Worst: Sweet Child O' Mine
Covered it in my first band when I was about 13, lead guitarist was all dressed up like slash trying to play everything note for note, also we had a female vocalist, it didn't work to good, and now I can't listen to that song.

Best - rocked out version of the Police's - Wrapped Around your Finger
Worst - Acoustic "Hot in Here" (Nelly song). We actually played this on a radio show. It was the whitest version ever...funniest damn thing. Unfortunately people kept requesting it, so we played it at 2 gigs and then never again... I hate that song.

Am I bad because I want to bang the girls from T.A.T.U.?
Best: I put a band together for one show (benefit local band showcase deal) and we did a 13 minute medley of Clapton songs.... if I recall we played Cocaine, White Room, Wonderful Tonight, Born Under a Bad Sign, Crossroads, After Midnight, Layla (both versions), and Sunshine of Your love... We made arrangements so we played about two verses of each one and modulated from one song to the next. Ahh... blessed excess. Crowd loved it, though.
Worst: I was in this ****ty band for like ten minutes here in St. Louis and we played a version of "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder that was so white and crappy I wanted to hide my face on stage. That song and "Safety Dance" by Some ****ty '80s Band (with the same group). Never have I felt so lame behind my guitar.
-k.

Good thread!
Best: My previous band did an entire set as U2 for Halloween two years ago--it sounded really good, especially with my E-H Bass Microsynth for some of the tunes on Joshua Tree & Achtung Baby. We all dressed up, too!
Last year's Halloween show as VIETNAMBLA (Turbonegro tribute) was good too, but I can barely remember it :D Again, we dressed up--this time in denim suits and sailors' hats.
Worst: Every time my college ska band played "Paint it Black" (retitled "Paint it Plaid", get it???). Damn, I hated playing that song.

Best cover: "Everybody Hurts" by REM. We played the first verse and chorus straight, then repeated it twice as fast and loud as we could, with the obligatory backgrounds of "hold on" the second time.
Worst cover: "House of the Rising Sun" by the Animals. Man, we should've been sued for that one.
(And I believe wanting to bang the chicks from T.A.T.U. is not a bad thing.)

you know, i've done this on my acoustic as well... and yes, alas, it does get the crowd going.
but it's cool if you're having fun with it all.
as Fran Healy from Travis once said, if Thom Yorke wrote and sang that song (in a very radiohead style, i imagine), everyone would think it was brilliant.

best cover: learn to fly by foo fighters, only me on guitar, first gig, our other guitarist couldn't make it, good performance, the crowd loved it, excellent
Worst cover: when i first started playing in my band, we tried (emphasis on tried) to play by the way by rhcp, man that sucked
I really want to cover back in black, but i can't do the solo, and i like the sound of the way the foo's did it, but i can't find a tab 4 the solo

BEST: Prison Sex & 4 Degrees by Tool
We NAIL 'em, and it feels great everytime.
WORST: some Phish song (lyrics went something like "find yourself a city to live in"...) the guitar player in my last band wanted to cover. Horrid...I was embarassed. I could never participate the "jam band thing"...

It's called "City", it is actually a Talking Heads song.

Best: A pile of '60's garage rock songs......Psychotic reaction by the Count 5, destimona By John's children, Smashed Blocked By John's Children, Levetation by the 13th Floor Elevators, No home today byt the Kult. And **** I did "altered" at new years parties as a teenages, the Ranma 1/2 theme, Starblazers theme. I *might* cover "Crimson and Clover by Tommy James and the Shodell's with a vocoder. Might......Very big might......
Worst: Crap I had to play with others before I would quit their bands, STP, Tool, even Nirvana(I love nirvana, but HATED playing it, there was No point to it). Any Sonic Youth songs. Any Pavement Songs. And Sebadoh songs. BEATLES COVERS (dear god, never again). Husker Du covers (another band I love but see no point in covering). SWANS cover....who in there right ****ing mind tries to cover the goddamned Swans? Really, WTF was that guy thinking?
And then there are the covers I wouldn't even try....you said "Led Zepplin" and I was out the door. same with "The Doors" "CCR" and 90% of american rock for '69-'73. AND IF I EVER.....EVER PLAY "NOW I WANNA BE YOUR DOG" AGAIN I WILL SCREAM(I love the stooges but seriously.......OVERDONE). Also, Vlevet Underground cover fall in the same catagory as the Stooges.
