I came pretty close to buying a DuoTone (which mccready in pearl jam uses sometimes) but ended up going with a Godin Solidac instead. Hamer's usa **** is top notch...their cheap stuff isn't so hot...

would someone explain the hamer thing to me? they always just seemed like second rate gibsons to me, but enough great players like them that i must just be missing something. i've never had much chance to play them, anyone want to fill me in?

Hamer is, to my mind, a "poor man's Gibson" that happens to kick ass on any Gibson from an equivalent year. The QC is top-notch and they use great pickups (DiMarzios in the 70's, Duncans in the 90's until present). Every USA-built Hamer I've ever played, my fingers have fallen in love with; it just happens to be my bad luck that I always find a nice one when I'm broke, and never when I have money! :(

It doesn't help that Hamers are hard to find in Toronto; the only store that regularly carries new ones is Scarboro Music Centre on Kingston Road (and I'm not a fan of their attitude).

+1 to the Monaco, Cubby. I'm seriously lusting after that one, too! Cherry red with a Bigsby <sigh>.

Tell me how to pronounce it so I don't make an ass outta myself at the shop.

Hay-mer

I used to own a Hamer Californian (USA). It was awsome. They are well made guitars.
I'd lovet to have a Hamer Standard USA model.

SHAKEnBAKE: Hay-mer... I think. well, that's what I've been saying for three years.

I play one of their cheap "Slammer" models, [Epi is to Gibson what Slammer is to Hamer] and for the $250 I paid for it, it's great.

I got it set up on Tuesday [for the first time] and the dude at the shop was suprised at how good condition the frets are in for a guitar that's been played almost every day for three years. And there I am, sitting there thinking it's worst excuse for a primary axe ever.

The stock pickups are still kicking, and are apparently "alot louder than most stock pickups on Epi's".

The neck, however wasn't one of it's better features [it feels alot wider than usual], but I've got used to it in the time I've been playing it.

I've always thought of the Hamer as a very good quality guitar and also pricey... Till I read this thread...

Too bad nobody imports them into Greece... :(

Me too.

There's one of those in my local shop with EMGs. I could be mistaken on that, but I'm 100% sure that it had active pickups in it. Anyway, it's gorgeous, as most Hamers are (at least to me).

This one (http://www.hamerguitars.com/?fa=detail&mid=391&sid=180) wouldn't be bad either.

Well this thread made me get off my ass and finally register. I had a studio custom up until two years ago when I sold it to buy an 82' LP Custom silver burst. Regretted it ever since. As much as I love the LP and my PRS I have always thought the Hamer with that giant and deep neck joint sounded better. The sustain is just infinite. So I literally bought this one this morning. If you want a hamer Willcutt is the place. Really class shop.

A couple things about Hamer. They are the only "large production" shop that still installs each fret by hand and hand carves the arch top of the guitar. The quality is among the finest in the world and much better than gibson with the exception of the custom shop which is more on par with what the Hamers are like.

Good gawd!

What was the price for one of those? Just curious... :D

$1999 plus the shipping cost. Worth every penny IMO. Would have paid more for that particular one. Black is not a standard color for Hamer. When it gets here I'll plug it into the powerball and make a clip and post it if it doesn't rip my face off.

That's the only guitar I would ever consider trading in my LP Junior for. Fortunately, I haven't had the chance to play one. Probably a good thing.

They are beautiful. The attention to detail is amazing. The fret finishing is the best I have ever seen.

My expectations were pretty high so I went over the guitar with a fine toothcomb. Absolutely flawless. The mop inlays are cut precisely into the fretboard not a speck of filler. First fret height off the nut and the bridge height were near perfect. The guitar was set up quite well by the dealer and I would assume from Hamer as well. A little tweaking to the neck bow and general intonation and I was rolling rather quickly. It's quite a bit lighter than I remembered my first studio being. The sustain is awesome. Fat resonant tone that balloons after striking the strings. That huge, deep neck joint really marries the body and neck well. Access to the upper frets is very good. My hand doesn’t touch the contour until my fourth finger hits the 20th fret.
All in all I am very, very satisfied. I have a special attachment to some of my other instruments for one reason or another. I can honestly say that this guitar seems to be one of the best built of anything I have owned including late 70s/early 80s LPs and early 90s PRS. That is saying a lot but I am just totally floored. It's really beyond what I had expected.

Right now, I am really happy for you, and insanely jealous. all at the same time. Damn, I wish I could find a decent Hamer dealer in TO. <sigh>
