View Full Version : Sonic Youth - Best Album
Alright, I've heard Sonic Youth a pretty decent amount before, but never owned any of their albums. I just saw them at Coachella (giant music festival in Southern California) and they were awesome (as were the White Stripes, screw you White Stripe haters). Anyway, what album would you guys recommend, I want something real noisy, experiental, loud, although that probably describes most of their albums. Which ones the best, why?

Day dream nation. Why? Because.

Daydream Nation is their best album, it's probably their best mix of accessibility and experimentalism. It's also hard to go wrong with Evol, Sister (probably SY's second best album), Goo, or Dirty. Their new album, Murray Street, is really good too. Yeah, I've seen Sonic Youth five times, and they put on a great show.
Daydream nation and Washing Machine, because they are the best album they ever made. BUT. The Whitey Album witch Ciccone Youth was (and is still) really good.

Best: Daydream Nation
Favorite: Sister
Ugly/Noisy: Confusion Is Sex
Haunting: Bad Moon Rising, EVOL
if you liked them at coachella, the one to start off with would be
Murray Street, then Washing Machine and Thousand Leaves would be good next steps.

Goo was the first album I bought. Then someone turned me on to Sister. That one is my favorite, sorry to say, even over Daydream Nation (which is still great). If you're looking for there more accessible sound I would start with Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo and Dirty. Those are the ones I consistently listen to when I'm in the mood for SY.

Its hard to recommend just one album, because they all have something different to offer. I would rate Washing Machine as my favorite, followed by Sister, Murray Street, Daydream Nation, and Goo.
I'm not really a big fan of Dirty or Experimental Jet Set.
If you are listening to them for the first time, Washing Machine and Daydream Nation are probably the best album experiences.

i figued skip tracer would go for washing machine
every sonic youth album is different from the rest from the pre-post punk (what a genre) of Confusion is Sex through the bad acid trips of Bad Moon Rising and Evol (my own personal faves) the rock of Dirty and the freeness of the later stuff.
buy the lot in order and listen to how much they evolved as a bad and just howgood they were
