There's this stupid behri snobbery thing with engineers, but all the behri stuff I've owned has done it's job well. You can definitely upgrade from it, but if ain't broke...

Looks like a nice set-up to me, what the specs of the computer you're running Sonar on?

behringer ub1202 mixer
alesis nanoverb

couch cushions and sleeping bags

korg poly 800 synth

boss dr-670 drum machine

koss pro-4aa headphones

emagic logic platinum

its not a complicated setup, or necessarily expensive, but i've worked pretty hard for it and it meets my needs. i have a solo project that involves me, my guitar, my drum machine, and samples, so thats what i spend the majority of my time recording.

the eurorack ub1202 is really a great mixer/preamp for the money. its cheap, but not cheap enough to not sound professional.

protools LE 6.4 factory with mbox

Yamaha MT4X 4-Track
Tascam Portastudio 488
Cool Edit Pro 2.0

Some other mic I stole from my old band's PA. It doesn't have a name on it.

As for effects, I either use the Cool Edit Pro effects, or hook up a Nanoverb or Magicstomp to the 4- or 8-track if I'm using either of those.

I entered into the world of computer recording all of 2 days ago, so here is my newborn setup:

-12" iBook G4 1GHz, 512MB RAM
-Tascam US-122
-Garageband
-Shure SM-57
-Sony headphones (silver, forget model #)
-powered by old home stereo into Yamaha home theatre bookshelf speakers that I got at A&B Sound boxing day sale for $27!

-will eventually remember to buy a MIDI cable so I can use my microKorg as a controller
-will also eventually get an external harddrive. Maxtor OneTouch 160GB FW/USB ok?

a few questions:
-can anyone suggest a good drum program for Mac? I'd love to use Fruity Loops, but no go on Mac. Anyone had any experience with iDrum? (I'm looking for realistic rock drum sounds)
-Stu, maybe you could suggest an intro-level condensor mic?

That's my newb setup, but I'm so happy with it! Garageband is so simple, yet powerful enough for my needs as of right now. Great thread!

Some really tidy (read 'great') set-up's going on here.

Unless anyone diagree's I fully recommend a Studio Projects condenser.

http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/

I have a B3, which is the cheapest switchable pattern they make and it blows some of my other, more costly mic's out of the water on acoustic instruments and vocals. There's also the B1 if you don't need to change the pattern. From their site:

B3 - Suggested List Prices: $219.99 US; £131 UK; €195 EU (Got mine for less than £100 - I think it was about £93)
B1 - Suggested List Prices: $119.99 US; £71 UK; €106 EU

Other one's to check out would be: M-Audio, SE, ADK, Oktava, Blue, Groove Tubes, Samson.

Hope that helps,

Stu

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely look into those.
But first, can you explain what switchable pattern means? :o

ericlaurence
10.03.04, 1:14 PM
switchable patterns means you can switch the pickup patterns on the mic. so cardiod (like your sm57), omni, figure 8, etc. it's very usefull because it's flexible. say you want to record to people singing. put the mic in figure 8 mode and put it between two people facing each other. or use omni. it's a good idea to have a couple of different mics with different pickup patterns. or you could just buy one mic with mutiple patterns.

Good explaination, thanks Eric.

You can also do some pretty advanced mic techniques with that SM57 and a fig-8 mic (or a switchable mic on a fig-8 pattern). Such as a technique called MS (Middle and Side). If you did go for a switchable mic, when you're ready to progress to some advanced mic techniques, you'll have the tools available. Another thing to think about in future is getting another SM57 - as you can then do some crossed (xy) and spaced (ab) pair mic techniques.

It's all good :)

Thanks guys! There's a B1 and B3 on eBay for $160 & $240CDN respectively, BIN and in Canada (no duty). I'll check with my local music store to see how they compare in price. Christmas is just around the corner...;)

Sorry to distract from the main objective of this thread. Please, continue!

Stu

the tube mp rocks if you take into consideration that its 50 bucks brand new. you will read reviews about it being noisy. it has noise, but noise that can EASILY be EQ'd out without losing any of your sound. as far as a cheap mic preamp goes, with the warmth of a 12ax7, it makes a world of difference for home recording...

i even like using it live for my vocals just to warm them up a bit. even though there are tons way better tube mic preamps, i'll swear by these because they're so inexpensive. and you can get away with using them for just about everything

who all has gone to school for recording? i'm going to the university of memphis next year to major in recording technology. it should be sweet... but it will probably make me feel stupid about methods i use now.

Well me for one, and I now teach at Deep Blue Sound in Plymouth along side some of the top guys in their respective industries: http://www.deepbluesound.co.uk/

This is my advice with learning to record - you have to learn the rules first - so you can break them later ;)

way to lazy to list it all right now, but some of the highlights off the top of my head

MAIN BOARD
panasonic da-7
(we run the adat cables out of the back into either an adat (tape) machine, or into a stienberg card w/ adat ins)

Fav. mics (again of the top of my head)
e609
a/t 4050 (I love this mic so so so much, soon to get another)
studio projects c1
a ribbon, c100-I think can't remember
oktavia mk-012(2) mk319(2)
a mic that was a yamaha speaker, with a cable to plug it in.
a/t atm25

ummm.......yeah that's it for now, just a couple quotes I like to remember (more valuable than gear)

"it's in the EAR not the GEAR."
"it's not how loud you make it, it's how you make it loud"

I know it's pretty anemic and small, but with enough effort, I can get some very good quality recordings.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good fairly-inexpensive condensor mics? I'm looking into the behringer B2 and various MXLs.

I'm all over Oktava's. The 319 is comprable to what you're looking for. But I haven't had any hands on with the Behringer so I can't compare. I've heard good things about the MXL as far as bang:buck goes, but I'm leary of them. From what I understand they have some component quality issues.

yeah, they CAN, but in the same breath can you really say oktava's don't? no. both of those mic company's are pretty hit or miss with quality control. It is worth it when you get one that's a hit. I have a couple 319's and 012's, I also have a couple 990's, all great mics for the price.

I have a few methods

1) Guitar-->Guitarport-->Computer running either windows sound recorder for demo ideas, rifftracker for better produced ideas, or a combo of rifftracker and audicity for other stuff

2) Guitar-->Amp-->SM57-->Mixer-->MP3 player (iRiver H140)

3) Acoustic guitar-->MP3 player's built in mic

Nothing pro (by ANY means), but it gets my riff ideas down :))

Why do you need a preamp? The preamps on the Digi 002 are pretty good, you don't really need a preamp besides those (unless you're recording drums). Instead of buying a preamp, I think it would be much more useful for you to spend more money on a better microphone, a non-Behringer compressor.

What do you need the Behringer B2 and the Shure SM57 for? The SM57 is a pretty good mic and I would suggest sticking with that, but it'd be much better to spend money on a mic other than the Behringer B2.

I plugged directly from my guitar into the soundcard, using a 1/4" ---> 3.5mm adaptor, as well as through the XXL.
Dry through the XXL was fine, no discernible loss of tone (c'mon, I'm plugging directly into the soundcard anyway). Didn't like Mixcraft's distortion, the default settings were stuck on "fart". Otherwise no complaints.

I'm buying Zoom's G2.1u next week. Looking forward to it. Not that I got too bad a sound today out of the above setup though. Recorded + mixed the rhythm, lead, bass(shifted pitch down an octave) guitars and full drums for 2 songs today! Pleased w/myself.

My current set-up:
TSM MT87S microphone
M-Audio MobilePre USB soundcard/pre-amp
Cubase SX software

Also I'm thinking about getting Magix Music Maker software. I know what some of you might be thinking, but I use MUMA for one thing: drum-programming. Everything else will be done with Cubase. I've programmed drums with MUMA for years on my old computer (which is now destroyed). I have some private drum samples and I ace at programming with MUMA. It's so simple and straight forward, and I have taught myself how to use it to great effect.

Once that is settled, I'm thinking about recording an EP of sorts. Written a few songs I would like to record. If nothing else it would make a great christmas gift for family and friends next year.

StratAtak: Sure will. I'll also be going to Japan in January so I probably won't be able to check out the recording side of it (and the bundled Cubase software) but at least I'll have my Epi Les Paul and Marshall RCD30 over there to test it on. :)

something I'm curious about.... I'd like to use a G4 Powerbook to run ableton live and reason to do some drum sequencing and things like that live. postal servicy type sounds meet jazzprogrock band. haha. how does that work as far as the recording goes? does it have a good amount of power?

I've got some cash to spare, so I may get a condenser soon. I'm looking at an MXL 990 or a Studio Projects B1, though the switchable pattern B3 seems like it would more than justify the extra cost. Any thoughts?

Here are some pics of my home studio area. The room is about 8 x 12 with 8 foot ceilings. I recently finished some of the acoustic treatments and built a new desk. The room sounds 1000% better after adding some broadband absorbtion to the corners and a few other traps to the walls and ceilings. There are a few finishing touches to do, and obviously more gear to be added ;) , but it's coming along pretty well. Check it out.

Haha, we have a ****ty setup, but it gives us pretty good recorded sound. I'd share some, but I accidently deleted a lot of my files a few months back.

-Shure SM58, Shure "Highball", various other mics
-Genexxa 6 channel mixer (Currently in "the shop" getting repairs)
-Sony dual cassette deck
-Sony stereo power amp
-2 Homemade 1X12 speakers

with the AUX output on the power amp going directly into the mic input in a PC (good way to blow a soundcard) with:

-Adobe Audition 2.0
-Protools and
-Frooty Loops

Shure SM58 Dynamic Mic

Monitoring
Just my home Philips Stereo system and my Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones (very good)

Misc
Roland Juno 6 Analog Synth
M-Audio MIDI Keyboard
My guitarrig of course, plus several other guitar and bass devices that aren't a part of my rig but I use here.
Metronome

Usage
I rarely record because me and my friend mostly do electronical music in Max/MSP.
I'm in a band also where I play the guitar and there I record a lot of stuff, but not with this equipment.
But it's nice to be able to record some samples and guitar/bass/synth playing and use it with the electrictronica.

Sorry it took a while to reply, been mega-busy (ask Coldbuggin' he knows :))

Yeah, the G4 Powerbook should be fine. I run Abbleton on my G4 iBook live and it's stable.

I used to run Pro Tools on a G3 iBook for location recording at that also worked fine and 1 Giant Leap (www.1giantleap.tv) was recorded entirely on an old black G3 powerbook. So the G4 should be more than powerful enough.

Have you seen the new MacBook Pro? It's the new Mac laptop based on an Intel chip. Unfortunately even Apple's own Logic needs to be upgraded to work on it, so music software for Intel based Macs is pretty thin on the ground at the moment.

It will inevitibly push the cost of PowerPC based Macs down though, but at the moment the G4 laptop and MacBook Pro share the same price brackets.

Cheers,

Stu

I am new at this as well but this it:

Behringer DXM3000 power mixer

Edirol(Roland) FA-101 interface

HP desktop (Not sure of the type but its plenty to run this system)

Cubase SE 3

I think its an okay start but it works for what I need so far.

sirterrapin:

with that Presonus Inspire, i know it says you can do four simultaneous inputs, but i want to be sure that if i get this, i'm going to be able to record four simultaneous and independent audio tracks so that i will later have complete control over each one. i guess this may or may not be dependent on the software one is running, so let me say that i'll probably be using, Logic and/or whatever software is included with the Inspire.

i pretty much just now decided i want to do my multitracking on my mac; right now i get all my tracks recorded with my Roland VS-840, and then hit play while running the Master out into my iBook. i'd like to eliminate the Roland and gain that four tracks at once ability, if possible.

that might have made sense  .

Really Lo-fi and silly compared with most of these:

Tascam Four track
Tascam mic (not sure really, came with the four track)
Guitar
2 Cheap Radioshack-Casio keys
Effects

I plug straight into the four track from the effects. I use my Line-6 Liqui-Flange's dual inputs to plug both my guitar and mic in. I do everything more or less live, because I like to be spontaneous. Nothing is really ever thought out, I just mess with everything to make sure I like the sound of it and then I level everything out so it doesn't distort to bad (unless I want it like that).

All in all, I sound like a drugged up primitive making psychedelic music. Really lo-fi psychedelic music. But I like it :D

I use a PC running Cubase SX and Reason with an M-Audio Delta 44 sound card. I use a small Behringer mixer with an Alesis 3630 compressor and the good ol' Quadraverb to get the sounds in. This setup has never failed me.
I recently set up a laptop running Cubase LE with a Presonus Firebox for remote recording. I take the tracks I record on the laptop and dump them into the PC for mixing through a pair of KRK's.
Cheap gear has never really let me down, although I'm not rough with my stuff. I've actually had the Delta 44 since my first PC setup and it's still going strong. My weakest link are my mics. I mainly use an old Audio Technica small diaphragm condensor mic that I found! I have a few dynamic mics laying around, but I don't like the sound of dynamics as much as condensors. They're good for miking loud amps and live performances....
I recently bought a few decent MXL mics so we'll see how it goes...
