I haven't seen one correct tab for this song yet. It is very obvious that the chorus and solo is played with a slide. You can clearly hear Jack using the slide on the recording and I once saw him on Conan O'Brien performing with a slide during the chorus and solo. Since he uses a slide it is obvious that he is playing in an open tuning. E i believe. So i can't understand why people have it tabbed in standard tuning and without a slide. This is beyond me.
P.S. If anyone has found a correctly tabbed version including the slide then please notify me and forget this message

I tried to work out the tuning myself and what I came up with was alright in parts but in others it sounded terrible or was really hard to actually play

Yes, its in open A (E A E A C# E) and he uses a digitech whammy pedal for the main riff.

Yeah its open A.
verse riff is - 5th string- 7-7-10-7-5-3-2
pre chorus is just a G5 chord followed by the open A
then chorus is E E G E D C B then E E G E D C D C B A
then you go through the prechorus pattern again and back into verse.
You could play everything but the solo in standard tuning without a slide if you wanted to by using the x0222x type bar chord and playing the chorus chords. It wouldnt be exact but if you dont like tuning a guitar to open A to play this song it will work.

I tabbed this song out, but I think the best interpretation of the song I've seen is in this month's issue of Guitar World. Led Zeppelin is on the cover.
It's in open A. Use a Digitech Whammy set to one octave down for the main riff. Use Electro Harmonix Big Muff and a slide during the chorus and solo parts. Plain and simple.
:)
Or you can go to www.brokenbricks.com . They specialize in White Stripes tabs. Their Seven Nation Army tab is pretty accurate.

It can be played in standard with the low E string tuned down to B.
