View Full Version : Guitars for little fingers
I have a nephew (who will be 9 this year) who my brother is interested in getting into guitar. My brother bought him a 1/2 size acoustic, which (a) refused to stay in tune, and (b) the neck snapped off (Note: this had nothing to do with my nephew; he's pretty good with his things). Any suggestions for a good beginner guitar (probably a nylon-string) for a kid that age? The Baby Taylor is gorgeous, but I think it's too much guitar (and too delicate) for somebody with two (much) younger siblings. Basically, a drool-and-accident-resistant nylon string that stays in tune. Any thoughts?
Cheers.

How about a mandolin? The technique is similar, but having small fingers is actually a benefit. The fender electric mando seems pretty indestructible. Also, because there are two strings rather than the one, you can get the real thing. Try for a Kentucky A-Style.

I wouldnet get the kid a mando unless he liked country and bluegrass music or was a bit of a Zep fan.
But I dont think that nylon strings are the best choise. Keep with the steel strings. They have never hurt my fingers and the day I got my first guitar I played it for like 5 hr. straight.
Guitar wise I think that maybe a Martin 00 size guitar would be good. But my advise is you and the kid should go to the guitar store and take a walk around the store with a sales ass. and s/he can lead you in the right direction to something that will fit the kid.
Also you might look in to an electric. They are eaiser to play than acoustics are because of the lighter strings and closer action. Something like a strat pack might be good for him.
