I requested it, but as of yet no joy. Anyone have a idea about the set-up for either Bernard or Richard from Suede????

Don't know what Fat Richard is using these days, never liked his tone. I do know on Coming Up he ran a Jaguar and Tele through a Marshall JMP-1 preamp and I think a Palmer speaker emulator and recorded direct. that's how he got that thin fuzzy tone that was amusing at first, then just annoying.

Bernard's Suede setup was pretty straightforward - Bigsby-equippend Gibson ES-355 and Telecasters through a Turbo Rat and Fuzz King into Vox AC30s. When he went solo a P90 equipped Les Paul came into the mix along with a Dunlop tremolo.

Readers Digest version - Gibson semi-hollow + Rat + Vox + genius = Bernard.

y'know, I spent ages trying to find out myself. Here's the replies I got from Bernard's message board:

" The Fuzz King was made made by Amplifier Corp of America in Westbury, NY, probably in the late 60s-early 70's. They're a small hammertone gray box with a footswitch on the top and volume and fuzz knobs on the sides. I've never seen the guts of one but I'd guess it's in a similar vein as the Fuzz Face, ie: 2 germanium transistor fuzz. They're not that common, but I've seen one or two for sale before in the $150 range. There's a picture of one in Art Thompson's book "Stompbox"."

and Bernard himself had this to say:

"Lots of the sounds on those records were heavily processed and closely double tracked........so it would be pretty hard to do it with just a pedal..........records are records and i dont care what you have to do to a sound to make it sound interesting.....

i think the intro to animal nitrate was a rickenbacker.......probably with a rat and ac30 or a boss turbo distortion.......on stay together i used a toy fender bassman for some of the parts.........otherwise it was my 355 and ac30with erm.......a rat ...........i have lots of them and i use which ever one has a battery that works.........i also use the colorsound tonebender........."
