hey everyone, this is my first post in the guitar section and the first time that i stopped to think about the fact that my guitar is the biggest part of my tone..
anyway, ive got a fender (squier) supersonic with 2 stock humbuckers, i like it and ive had it for a few years now. the only upgrades ive done is put new saddles (graphtech ferraglides) on it and i really love them. i would like to make just a few upgrades to get this playing better.

first im thinking about getting a new graphtech (tremnut) nut. i have heard many good things about these, and why wouldnt it be worth it for $10?
but most importantly i want to upgrade my pickups, or at least my bridge pickup. on a side note, what ive noticed is my pickups got very rusty one day after i left it in my case in my car, and its really annoying to look at.

i would love to get an upgrade where ill just hear a big difference, i play mostly rock, kind of a zeppelin meets the mars volta (overdrive not distortion/rock not metal type of thing), so not really heavy bass but im looking for a crunchy type sound that gives me some nice warm mids, pretty much the jimmy page meets omar rodriguez (tmv-era) kind of tone. for the neck pickup id like it to be more bluesy(?) sounding and really fat.

if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks alot

This is a fun one.

Standard humbucker-sized bridge-positioned pickups I would suggest looking into are (in no particular order):

EMG-HZ H4

Seymore Duncan APH-1 Alnico II Pro

Apparantly Fender Lace makes a pickup called the Humbucker D series, which sounds promising from it's description on warmoth.com

and any kind of vintage reissue Gibson pickups, which come in a variety of eras for you to choose from (57's or 59's maybe?).

As for the Jazz-styled, neck position pickup:

Seymore Duncan provides a Benedetto A-6 humbucker, which is used in some signature fenders (named, of course, after the famous Jazz box luthier, Robert Benedetto). Bob himself claims to find the B-series humbucker to be the best, though.

TV Jones makes a blusier-sounding pickup that is essentially a filtertron (like in Gretsches) that's made to fit a humbucker cavity. check out their website for the kind that sounds best, but I think the standard TV'tron would do you just fine.

Also, I recommend that you search Ebay for pickups from older guitars from around the time you're kind of going for (mid-late 70's, right?). There are always people trying to get rid of original parts like that, and I don't thibnk I really have to tell you that putting an original in will sound much better than a reissue in most cases.

Keep hunting, there are TONS of other pickups just as good or even better than those I listed.

The Bennedetto PUs are very Jazzy but very early '50s sounding. So get ready for a very bright sounding PU.

The Lace D series had a very low peak frequency (high attack) hence I have to assume it's another variation of Jeff's 2x stacked single coil model (dually) ... if so it will not sound like atraditional humbucker. Should ask Don Mare at the Lace message board for further info.

how does this sound:

bridge: SD 59 or JB.... or Alnico II pro
neck: SD 59

i dont know why but i want to go with seymour duncans, i just just need to narrow it down more i guess.

and these will all work with my 2 humbucker setup (neck bridge with 3-way selector/ controls: 1 volume for each, no tone)?

and lastly ive been seeing things about splitting this and that or wax potting, and all these things i can do.. what are they and would anyone reccommend doing any of these things?

i dont want the EXACT page tone, and i know im not going to come close and that the next thing in my setup might be taking away from that but i just want to be one step closer and i feel that pickups are a good place to start with that guitar.

thanks again

I personally don't like the '59 because even though it's a fine PU it doesn't sound like any '59 PAFfabe I've ever tried and I've tried a few authentic ones too (who knows what year thery were but they were Patent # decals).

I love the JB because it's versatile as for sound and as for which guitar it goes into and has huge harmonic power. That's my scoop on the JB.

No tone pot would make the JB very bright but yes it would work.

Wax potting I would not recommend doing but is doable. The Duncan Shop can wax pot you a set of Antiquities.

Splitting means killing one coil ... reduces output since onlyy 1 coil is actually working ... is no longer noiseless ... and no longer humbucking meaning a simili-single coil tone.

Yes, a very good start but don't try to decide this overnight. If you serious send me a PM and we'll work on ever PU available and if really think Duncan is the way ... we'll stick to Duncans but knowing the differences makes for an educated decision.

I think it's that black American guy who used to set his guitar on fire in the late 70's.....before he gave up on music and became a school janitor.
