Instrumental guitar:
Anything by Oscar Lopez.....all of his CDs are great in the car.
Mambo Sineuendo by Ry Cooder and Manuel Galban
If you're fighting traffic....."Crave" by Ted Nugent! :)
Just a few that got me through my 9 hour road trips.....

just don't play any pink floyd on long trips, you'll fall asleep.

during the day: hard driven rock 'n' roll (ala zz top). I've some compilations, some made by my girlfriend!!!
during the night: pink floyd, jazz...
when I feel ****in' lonely, I turn up the radio and listen to some really stupid programs hosted by really ignorant deejays...
If you're driving through the american southwest, get some Calexico. They epitomize that entire landscape.
Other deserty and spacious selections:
Mazzy Star
Mojave 3
Friends of Dean Martinez
Lanterna

I always listen to Led Zepplin or Bob Marley or something classic like that... And Jeff Buckley at night.

I usually listen to the manics from the mid '90s, though recently its been a bizarre combo of Blur, the white stripes and Weezer.

Yeah, anything that's got a strong beat will get you through the day. In my case, if it's raining I prefer something fast and upbeat, because rain has a funny effect on my sleepiness.

If I'm trying to stay awake, energetic stuff that you can sing (or scream) along to is nice. The Pixies, Sleater-Kinney, The Rapture, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, New ****ographers, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Sonic Youth. But there's nothing like driving at night, looking at the stars, and listening to Hum, Yume Bitsu, The Lips' Soft Bulliten, Slowdive, Pink Floyd..stuff like that helps pass the time, because you really get lost in the music and forget about how long you've been on the road. My fiancee and I like to listen to stuff with harmonies so we can sing together. Dorks, I know. but its fun. We'd listen to the Beatles, and I'd be John and she'd be Paul or something. :o
I equate certain albums with different trips, now. Listening to Jets to Brazil's Orange Rhyming Dictionary always reminds me of driving to New York, because that album came out around the time I went up there and I listened to it about a thousand times. I remember driving through the Appalachains listening to Centaur's "In Streams," now every time I listen to that album I think of the mountains. It was the perfect soundtrack.
I could talk about this forever. I love going on road trips and listening to music. Its so much fun.

Singing along. Hmmm, that sounds familiar, makes you feel like a nutter at traffic lights when you're belting it out though!:D

I love live albums, because you just put it on and the songs flow. Two of my favorites are "Absent Lovers" by King Crimson and "S&M" by Metallica.
The Descendents- Milo Goes to College
and any Dead Kennedys. Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Frankenchrist, and Holiday in Cambodia are good choices.

You've got a good 4-5 hour trip ahead of you.
I brought all of my STP albums (only listened to Purple & Tiny Music), Talk Show (STP minus Weiland), U2 (Joshua Tree), Steel Pulse (need some rastafarian tunes on the road), Steely Dan (Greatest Hits/Gold), and of course TOOL (Undertow - my fav).
Dime the volume, hit the "road piece", crank the AC and watch out for the slow assholes !
Hey, if you leave Sunday, leave before 7am or you will be in for a llllooooonnnngggg ride back (hung over, if you did Vegas right); or leave Monday morning.
Drive safe !

but every one and their cousin will be leaving on sunday on a regular weekend...
but i have work on monday... so i have to brave the traffic out of vegas. :(

Might be cliched but when im "on the road" i like hearing songs about the road...
Truckin' - the Grateful Dead
Highway Star & Space Truckin' - Deep Purple
Road Trippin' - RHCP
Roadhouse Blues & LA Woman - The Doors
Ramblin' Man - Allman Brothers...
So on and so forth...also anything by AC/DC, the Who, or Led Zeppelin...anything cool...

If you need some energy then listen to:
Van Halen 1984
AC DC - back in black
!!!- self titled
But for me, I like drawn out ambient type stuff:
yume bitsu - yume bitsu
surface of eceon - king beneath the mountains
tristeza - anything they have ever done
sonna- anything they have ever done
bethany curve - gold
aarktica - no solace in sleep
cerberus shoal - and farewell to hightide and homb
Tenacious D's "The Road"! Preferably the live version. They wrote it before ever having been on the road, but they knew what life on the road was like from everyone else's "road" songs.
"Gone Ridin'" - Chris Isaac
"Space Truckin'" - Deep Purple
"Jeepster" - T-Rex
"Electric Avenue" - Eddy Grant
(What??? You can't not love that song!!!)

I ussually say Classic Punk Rock, something about drive and it just goes along.
Buzz****s
Husker Du
Bad Brains
Minor Threat
DK's
Wipers
Wire
The Fall
Though, I don't drive, so this is more bus listening to me.
alright,
early morning, sweet lofi pop like the Radar Bros, some crooked fingers, or anything with nearly a country vibe to it really. [you're in america, you're on the road, and the sun is just coming up.] or like mentioned above, ry cooder/manuel galban's mambo sinuendo is an amazing bright and early record.]
stop and get food. then slip in some obnoxious pop [enon?], 'math' rock [faraquet, don cabalero, volta do mar, drive like jehu, cap'n jazz etc.], or crazy jazz [i really like medeski martin & wood's 'the dropper' during road trips] during the day to keep yourself awake. besides bad [good] pop music, anything that is mostly instrumental and fast.
and night time. more ambient or spacy stuff. yume bitsu would be nice i'd imagine. also the mercury program, some sonic youth, mogwai, sigur ros,
and once you swerve off the road from listening to all of that nonsense, throw in some ministry for good measure..
just kidding :)
be careful. and have fun.
