does anyone now how to get the sound thin lizzy use to play the main riff in the boys are back in town

try either a les paul deluxe or a les paul custom through 70's marshalls.

The guitar in one speaker (Gorham and Robertson are panned hard left-right in the mix) is using a phase shifter, likely an MXR Phase 90. It's a subtle effect, but it adds some separation and depth to the guitar tracks.
