Well on a previous thread I posted how I was growing bored with my rig.. and it was suggested that I pick up an acousitc and start playing... well I borrowed my drummers acoustic and have been playing it since, I love it, I don't know why I waited so long to get an acoustic...
Don't really need anything... just a general rant
I know what you mean. Right now, a nylon string is acoustic is on the agenda. I'm just not sure if I should get a cheap one to get me by, or if I should just save to get a nicer one. I have no idea how much I'd use one.

Sometimes a "change of scenery" is all it takes to make you appreciate things a little more/differently.

There's nothing better than picking up an acoustic guitar and fiddling about on it and making some smooth progressions, it relaxes you and gives those ears a rest!!
Then ofcourse within about a couple of hours you realise you want to play a guitar solo, so you need to reach the 12th-20th frets, so you pick up the electric and are back to square one, trying to look like a rock star again!
A general rule in being able to play guitar well is being able to explore an acoustic well.

Or you could get an acoustic with a cutaway.

Glad my advice worked for you. :)
I find that playing an acoustic can really cleanse your mind of all the 'ultimate quest for tone' nonsense. Also, it's much more genuine...an acoustic guitar speaks directly to you and represents your playing honestly (no distortion to cover up mistakes). Really, nothing against electric guitars...I play mine more often, but I find that picking up my acoustic feels much more natural. It inspires me more, too...I've written all my songs on an acoustic guitar.

If it sounds good on an acoustic, chances are it'll sound good everytime, anyway. How come a lot of people today don't play acoustic anymore and prefer to just lash out on the electric end?
That's a good question... but it's a complete mystery to me. I just think that there are not as much great acoustic songs being written today compared to the 70s or 80s. The Beatles did some great acoustic ones, like blackbird. Then you've got ballads like cat's in the cradle and johhny cash, jim croce, neil young... and their songs are timeless! People still play them and will continue playing them. Today's acoustic songs have that pop quality where they get forgotten after a few months. Some though have that timeless feel to it... nirvana had good ones in unplugged, radiohead too. That's why when you play acoustic and delve deep into it, you tend to dig up old records to lidten to those acoustic classics.
I think you need a solid acoustic base to stand on no matter what style you play.
Anybody ever tried classical? I just got my classical guitar this week and I'm hooked! I used to think that the nylon string was only for old classical songs so I always put off learning how to play. But now I realize how mellow and "soft" a classical guitar's sound is! It's amazing for solos! (check out hotel california, the unplugged version). good luck to ya, skyneverclaimed! check out some songs from the past if you want to take your acoustic playing further...

acoustic are great for practicing on too. If you can play something on an acustic you can ply it on an electric
Acoustics give you that purity. Nothing screwing with it. No "magnetic" interpretation of tone. Just the tone vibrating the air. Pure. And you have no short cuts. It makes you play it. You have to belly up and play a steel string. You have to want to bend those strings. You have to have control over it. Which means you can't fake it...or get off with some slinkies...and paper thin action. You have to push yourself...and your music. So when the dust settles, you come up with some cool stuff.
I like the percussive feel of a good acoustic. The way the body and strings come off like a drum when you attack the notes.
Sorry...kinda biased. Played 'coustic for the first 10 years. Never even owned an electric guitar or any effects all that time. I still go back to it to write. Even if I come up with something on electric now...I pick up one of the my acoustics and check it. To see if it sounds good on it's own...without all that "interpretation" of the note.
The earlier post was right. If it sounds good on an acoustic...it will sound good no matter what. But not everything played on an electric with loads of effects would sound good pure.
My Band writes pretty much everything acoustically, if it sounds good on an acoustic guitar than you know the song sounds good and that you're not relying on effects to fix the problems in your progression.

ive been working on an album, and i started by writing all the songs on acoustic, ive decided to leave a few of them acoustic. i find people will listen to the lyrics better if their not buried behind distortion and loud drums. i love acoustic guitars, im always that guy at the party who sits down (after a few) and plays for the whole party, i love performing, even if its only for my little sister... i like having a voice and expressing myself artistically for people.
