what the hell is that high pitched trick that they use in the middle of their riffs.. i usualy hear it on death metal but a lot of bands use it... is it pinch harmonics???

yup, they're pinch harmonics.. look at this:

http://www.cyberfret.com/techniques/harmonics/pinch/index.php

that should help a lot. im an amateur 'pincher' (hahaha), so if you need further assistance, let me know, and ill do my best

zz top, zack wylde.. they can be frequetly heard in their music.. adam jones uses them in the 'parabola' solo a little.. very tasteful

pinch harmonics are awesome!!!

id consider myself a pretty good guitarist, but the only thing ill EVER actually brag about is my ability to do pinch harmonics. i saw this like 10 minute zakk wylde guitar solo from 89 i think, and he was doing these pinch harmonic runs, i had to do them. i lost two weeks of my life on it but i can now do a pinch harmonic on any string at any fret:D

so are pinch harmonics supposed to be pick harmonics, or what?

So you basically just make minor adjustments to your left-to-right hand positioning to get the right spots for wicked squeals?

I can do them, not off by heart though, I haven't memorised the positions yet. :)

I can't do them when I want to... haha.

Are pinch harmonics amp related too? Like do super high gain amps pinch better than low gain amps?

it was suggested to me when first trying to produce them to roll the treble and the gain knobs wayyy up so itd be easier to hear if i was doing it or not.. but after I've somewhat perfected the technique, you can almost hear them on my acoustic!
it also helps to have active pickups or other form of boost. and i think super high gain would be better, but you can do them almost on any amp. like i said, adam jones uses a couple in the parabola solo, and he doesnt use that much gain, comparitively

and villageidiot: there's a number of positions to produce them off the fretboard.. typically as you move up (higher pitches) the fretboard, your picking hand is going to go more towards the bridge. .thats what i do anyway. good places to start is imagine where the 24th fret would be (guess your screwed if you're a prs user! HA!) or over some of the pickups.. just expieriment, youll get it.

the way i found the locations, which i think it discusses in the cyberfret article, is to do a 'touch harmonic' (place index finger on the string as if it were your fretting hand producing a natural harmonic, then pick behind your finger, releasing your index like a natural harmonic) over your pickups until you produce one. this will

the name ive heard the ones we're discussing are pinch harmonics. i guess they could be called pick harmonics too? its the one produced with the pick and thumb or index finger of the picking hand.. there's a million names for harmonics and they all over lap

Yeah... I play around with it a bit.

Trying to work it out mathematically- say if I want to do 10th fret PH, then a 12th fret PH, how far I should move my hand across to get a consistent sound.

It's getting there.

I love pinch harmonics.. learned them from playing Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrell stuff, I also love the way a pinch harmonic sounds on an acoustic, ohh droool*

If you want a badass pinch like Wylde or Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom do this : Go to the lower strings i.e. low e, then to the A note of the E string. i hope u atleast have .80 MM pick..... Now hold the pick so ur thumb AND INDEX is extended about .5 MM over the edge of the pick. now hit the string at about a 45 degree angle, making sure both flaps of skin hit the string to double mute the vibration of the string b/c thats how a harmonic is done. When u pick, u must almost automatically and similtanesously mute the string.

Yeah i could never do them until the other day. I was reading something about them and the guy said how he did them and I tried it and bang there goes the squel!
But experimentation is the best way, I mean I usually only get about 1 in 5 tries but still. I also find that the less time the string rings (i.e you can't even hear it) the easier and better they are.

haha, I couldn't agree more. The funniest shred video ever is "Speed Kills" with Michael Angelo..it's so ridiculous I just laugh at it and ask myself, "is this guy dead serious?".
