I can't remember if there was already a thread somewhere about this but, whatever. I want to know who y'all look up to when it comes to the guitar or maybe just music in general. Mine is Jimmy Page no doubt about it. Have fun!

Nice one gururyan for pointing out that Andy Dunlop is a great guitarist, he's so chiming and creative. I've seen them live three times, at shepherds bush empire, the london apollo and the forum, tey are so good live, my fave song at the moment is Indefinetely from the Invisible Band.
Anyway i generally look up to Thom Yorke, Chris Martin and Bono when it comes to songwriting.
But when it comes to guitar playing i look up to Jonny Greenwood, The Edge, Andy Dunlop and Jonny Buckland.
Andy Dunlop was the main reason i picked up guitar four years ago, he has some sweet les pauls.
My first guitar hero was Johnny Winter. My second was Jimmy Page. Third was John McLaughlin. Now I think I'm a bit old to have a guitar hero but my favourite is still John McLaughlin.
the greatest... david gilmour
and hendrix of course

7. Bennie Smith
8. Doc Watson
9. Jerry Johnson (my guitar teacher... the dude is a badass)
10. Chet Atkins (don't really play like him, but i suuuure wish i could)
Duane is probably my top. His playing was technical and soulful and took you on a trip. By far the best jammer I've ever heard.
peace,

HENDRIX HENDRIX HENDRIX
Bow before the altar of Jimi Hendrix. Try living on the street and sleeping with your guitar for a couple of years it will make you badass. Honorable Mention : Duane Allman. Absolutely amazing guitar player listen to him on Live At The Fillmore. I wish just once someone would yell at me during a quiet solo break "Play all night" That's a complement.

Believe it or not, I picked up the guitar because of Joey Santiago. I guess he would have to be called a guitar anti-hero. Alister Parker from Bailter Space, Adam Franklin from Swervedriver, Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine from Television, and last but not least, Robert Quine (I love his playing on Lou Reed’s Blue Mask and Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend).

So many great guitarists
My favorites are
Bob Mould - In a free land is one of my favorite songs. I wish I could have seen husker du or sugar. To me Husker Du was one of the best punk bands of all time. very underrated
J Mascis - Probably one of indie rocks all around great guitarists. Dinosaur jr should have been huge. I hate the fact that nirvana is given all this groundbreaking status. I mean they were ok but not that good. I think its funny that kurt cobain wanted j mascis to drum for nirvana before they got dave grohl becasue he loved dinosaur jr so much. If you listen to that last song nirvana had a video for, Which I think is called " you know your right", Kurt has that lazy style of singing that J mascis always had. Mr Mascis, please tour Pennsylvania again, thats if you are reading this.
Adam Forkner - The way he bounces his notes with delay. He also has this cool way of singing with franz, the other guitar player in yume bitsu.
Johnny Marr - Its all about the rickenbacker.
Robert Smith - Fender IV and all the layered guitar parts.
Jimmy Lavelle - By far I think my favorite tone. He has a fender mustang through a fender twin reissue. But the sound is so pretty and layered i just love it. Another band that broke up and could have been so huge.
Jeremy Devine and Chris Mackie - its a damn shame Sonna had to break up. These guys made me wanna buy an akai headrush because they use it so smoothly. all their releases are beautiful. I highly recommend them.
Kevin Shields - I dont know what he would have done if jags and jazzmasters had no tremelo arms
Adam Franklin - Because I will " Never Lose That Feeling". Another very underrated guitar player. Swervedriver will always be one of my favorite bands.
Rikk Agnew - Yes a true weirdo, but he was in so many damn good punk/gothpunk bands
Aaron Snow - for the sound he gets out of his roland space echo
Carl Hultgren - He gets so many different delay times out of a rack and a couple pedals.

Jimi Hendrix and Robbie Krieger were my original inspirations, and I still love Krieger's playing, even though I'm through with Hendrix. However, Johnny Marr is my ultimate guitar hero - he made playing the guitar cool again in the 80s, and he is still cool.

I know he's not really very "good", but Noel Gallgher is my guitar hero of all time just because he inspired me to pick up the guitar. my current "guitar hero" is Tom Morrelo. I also always really been inspired by Jeff Beck, he's one amazing guitarist!

Jeff Beck is still amazing, true. And what Noel Gallagher has learned, he's learned it all from Johnny Marr.

One of mine is Billy Corgan, i think hes great for left handed, playing a right handed ! He's a songwriting genius (both Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan) he wrote almost all of the Smashing Pumpkins songs. I don't understand Tom Morello from RATM, how can your guitar hero be some one that plays with a Whammy alot (but it was beautiful though, Voice of the Voiceless intro, just fell in love with that!)? He finally proved himsel all around to me on Audioslave (the jazzy runs are great! He never had the atmospheric chance in RATM) I must agree with Jonny Greenwood, he's great, and he adds so much to all of there songs that Radiohead makes (from Pablo Honey, which all of you probably hate, to Hail To The Thief). I admire Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion, an excellent lead player who has proved himself in that past 20 years. As did Eric Melvin from NOFX (the newer stuff just shows more and more talent! I totally dig it!). Later

Jimi Hendrix, greatest ever in my opinion.
Also enjoy David Gilmour, Slash, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammet, Tony Iommi, Tom Morello (rage), Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, BB King, Albert King, George Harrison, John Lennon, Jimmy Page, Robbie Krieger, Dimebag Darrell (if only for his rhythms), Suicial Tendencies guitarist (mike I think), and tons others but these stand out most to me.

James Hetfield , he's who made me want to pick up a guitar and learn it in the first place , others would have to be zakk wylde , kirk hammet , slash , dimebag , john petrucci , richie sambora , ace frehley .... the list goes on
Hendrix & Josh Homme (Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age/Desert Sessions)
David Moyse...anyone know who he is?

I agree with most of them, but I must add Frank Zappa, Adrian Belew and some jazzy cats like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Scott Henderson. They're not quite as "hot" as some rockers, but they're way "cooler" ;)

Yeah, I agree. I certainly get really excited about music when I listen to Django Reinhardt, but I don't usually mention people like him or Mike Stern, or Leni Stern, because I don't/can't play anything like them.
Of course, I can't play anywhere near Bob Mould or Steve Albini either, so I don't know what my problem is.....
:p
Tom Morello has got to be my favorite guitarist. He does things on the guitar that no one has ever even thought of doing. He doesn't shred a lot, but when he does, it's like nothing you have ever heard. Adam Jones is another guitarist I enjoy listening to. His guitar parts are so perfect.

I don't see why you all love and praise hendrix so much. He wasn't a highly skilled guitarist, nor did he use all of the gear that most of you do. He was just very fluid, and like most guitarist of the day, knew how to relate emotion through his guitar. Most of that emotion I write off on all of the acid he was tripping on. My heros are the real heavy hitters of the guitar world; John Petrucci, Ynwie Malmsteen, and Tom Morello. Yes, Tom Morello of RATM and Audio Slave. Why you ask, because he is a king among men with his effects. Ok, I've said my piece on that toppic.

hello
1- Bill Frisell 'jazz guitarist'. If you don't know him, get 'Nashville' the album that made me like country.
2- Agata from Melt Banana is responsible for me switching from classical to electric. On CD he is interesting, live he is ***amazing***. I find its Morello-style, but faster, more efficient and diverse.
3- Ben Monder new jazz guiatrist
4- If you want to hear good classical guitar, check Alvaro Pierri's work on the analekta label. His Villa-Lobos album will blow you away. (Segovia is a real pioneer, but god he is boring to listen to)

Actually, I have no guitar idols, so many are far too over-rated. I have been inspired but not decided.
So many choices....
Van Halen for his skilled use of practically every technique under the sun, and for my favourite riff ever "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love".
Joey Santiego for his messy, trashy and great lead work on "Doolittle" and "Surfer Rosa / Come on Pilgrim".
Yngwie for his stupidly fast and wholly unneccesary use of sweep-arpeggios.
Josh Homme because of the whole sludgy Kyuss / QOTSA sound which is mind blowing, and his always impressive use of the guitar for spacey lead work.
Hendrix... just because ;)

Though I admire many great guitarists, I have to say that my number one hero is without a doubt Neal Schon of Journey. Which is pretty odd considering I'm nowhere near as fond of his style of music as I am of metal. Journey's getting heavier, though, if their recent music is anything to go by. Songs like "World Gone Wild" and "State of Grace" show that Journey has serious heavy rock potential.
Many many many. But number one must be Hendrix- watching a clip from the Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore doing Machine Gun did something truly weird to my brain, and made me pick up the guitar (got that same weird feeling recently after watching Blue Wild Angle - the Isle of Wight concert - felt odd for hours afterwards :D ).
Also in there would have to be Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Satriani, and Richie Blackmore.
And I'm going to give Jeff Beck his own paragraph. :D He may not be the most consistent guitarist around, but when he's on, no-one can touch him. Maybe Hendrix was up there, but only him.

My favorites are
Bob Mould - In a free land is one of my favorite songs. I wish I could have seen husker du or sugar. To me Husker Du was one of the best punk bands of all time. very underrated
YESSSS!!!!! Bob Mould is one of my biggest influences, guitar, vocally and lyrically. More people should listen to his stuff, solo as well as with Husker Du and Sugar. Workbook is a great acoustic album (See a Little Light still gives me shivers), and Black Sheets of Rain . . . if you like punk, or punk-influenced music, you owe it to yourself to check out Bob Mould.
It's funny, when Guitar Player did an interview with Kurt Cobain back in 1992, they actually said, "Nirvana's sound is nothing new. Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. have been mining the same sound for years without half the acclaim." J. Mascis is so cool that Sonic Youth even wrote a song about him (Teenage Riot). You know you're the **** when . . .
Johnny Marr - Its all about the rickenbacker.
Johnny Marr used A LOT more than just Rickenbackers! Actually, I heard that This Charming Man was recorded with a Tele. Johnny Marr is probably the best example of playing for the song. A brilliant, brilliant, textural guitarist.
Robert Smith - Fender IV and all the layered guitar parts.
Who'd have thought that a short, chubby, Camus-quoting depressive could have lasted this long? Brilliant stuff, especially his Fender Bass VI stuff. Check out The Glove, the record he did with Siouxsie & the Banshees bassist Steve Severin.
Other faves? Doug Gillard with Guided by Voices. Jerry Cantrell, both solo and with Alice in Chains. Dave Navarro. Tom Morello. B.B. King. Hound Dog Taylor (the bluesman so cool, Bruce Iglauer formed Alligator just to record him!). That's all I can think of, off-hand.
well back in the days, I started playing guitar because of Kurt Cobain. But he's not my guitar hero, at least not anymore. My guitar heroes are:
Billy Corgan
jimi Hendrix
Jonny Greenwood
Graham Coxon
Lee Ronaldo
Thurston Moore

Kirk Fisher (Buzzov-en)
Buddy Apostolis (Buzzov-en)
Tony Iommi
KK Null (Zeni Geva)
Norman Westberg (Swans) *his playing is so minimalist, you can't help but love it
Doyle circa '83, because he proved anyone can play guitar
Neil Young (best solos in the world)
Jimi Hendrix

My two main guitar heros are David Gilmour and Jonny Greenwood. Both of them just put out melodies that are totally unique, but incredible. If you can play/sing/anything along with a guitar part the first time you hear a song, something's very wrong.
Honorable mentions, of course, have to go to Tom Morello, The Edge, Brian May, Nick McCabe, Jeff Buckley, and Robert Sledge. I don't care if Sledge is a bassist, what he's done with Ben Folds Five has completely changed how I look at bass, and some of that has bled over into my guitar sensibilities.

ANGUS YOUNG!!!!
come on, i cant believe angus isnt on everybody's list. have u seen him? this guy is absolutely one of the all time great guitar players, even though he isnt as technically proficient as say eddie van halen, but he is a blast to watch onstage.

my friend good friend Tim. He was never great, but he was the one who put the guitar in my hands for the very first time in my life... therefore he is my hero.
I'm 45 and my guitar hero is still Frank Zappa...but there is another guitar player that I love: Josh Homme from Kyuss and QOTSA.

And I have to add Bill Weber (Murder Junkies) and Buzz Osbourne. Bill because he is probably the best pure punk guitarist I've heard and Buzz because of his amazing inventiveness. Oh yeah, and Dylan from Earth, because he pissed all those speedmetal heads off when he played an open chord for 35 minutes as Earth's set when they were opening for some lame speedmetal band.

guitar heroes. well my ultimate favourite guitarist has to be matt bellamy from muse. GOD! he has such incredibly good knowledge of his guitar, and can pull all sorts of sounds out of them. also he owns some very nice guitars. i think he is quite underrated because he also plays piano a lot *which he is also incredibly good at*. he writes fantastic songs, and should be up there with the best.
my first hero was brian may, he just ruled.
others include:
george harrison
pete townshend *amazing guitarist, why only number 50? damn you rolling stone!*
som wardner: really great guitar sound
kurt cobain *really inspiring, not the best guitarist ever, but damned good at writing and controlling feedback*

Graham Coxon
Jonny Greenwood
Omar Rodriguez
.. or more traditionally, Stevie Ray Vaughn
First in foremost Kevin Shields. The man is a sound genius. I've never heard anyone make a guitar sound so beautiful and heavy at the same time.
Some others:
Robert Smith of the Cure....he gets alot of credit for songwriting but he is also a brilliant guitarist IMO.
No one mentioned Bernard Sumner of Joy Division/ New Order... his earlier riffs in Joy Division were so simple but effective.
Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins.. enuff said!
Jason Pierce of Spiritualized/ Spacemen 3
Andy Bell & Mark Gardener of Ride
Brian Jones- Rolling Stones
Peter Hayes- BRMC
William Reid- Jesus & Mary Chain
Nick McCabe- Verve
John Squire- Stone Roses
My personal guitar heros are:
Angus Young - AC/DC
Eddie Van Halen
I don't need much more.
I like alot....
Andres Segovia...
pure genius. Hands down the best classical guitarist. One of the reasons I wanted to get a degree focusing on Classical guitar...
Phil Keaggy...
great all around guitarist... his work on THE WIND AND THE WHEAT was just amazing...
Stanley Jordan...
Blown away by his style... He said it was easier for him to play 2 guitars at one time then to play 1... If you haven't heard him, you should pick up his MAGIC TOUCH album... you won't look at your guitar the same again
The Edge...
an innovater of sound and style... In the music that I have been writing lately is influenced by him...
Mike McCready/Stone Gossard
Great duo... I like how they play for the song and not for the solo... I don't know if that makes any sense or not... but they are great together...
Neil Schon of Journey and I think this forum goes to prove my theory that Lindsey Buckingham is the most under-rated guitarist of all time.

John Frusciante. He has essentially devoted his whole life to music, not just playing but listening, and by now his knowledge of infinite different styles is so vast that you can drop him in any situation and have him excel.
Apart from him, there's the obligatory Clapton/Page/Hendrix, and also Angus Young, Pete Townshend, Duane Allman, Kirk Hammet, and Billie Joe Armstong. Oh and also Flea, cause his bass solos (not the slap ones) are so unique and awesome that I try to add a bit of his style to my playing.

I should've done this a while ago, but I forgot about this thread.
The last month has given me ample reason to rescind my statement that Neal Schon is my greatest guitar hero. That honour DEFINITELY belongs to Tom Morello now. I have espoused his music with greater zest than anything else, and if I ever stop covering his **** and start writing my own music, I'll definitely perpetuate his style. I adore it.

i think the guitarist who has influenced my playing the most is John Fogerty (believe it or not) -- then prolly Pete Townshend, Keith Richards and Chuck Berry -- altho i think you'd hear much more of Townshend's influence in my acoustic playing rather than electric

One of the reasons I chose Link Wray is because he was the main influence on Townshend. Townshend has said that if it wasn't for Link he would have never picked up the guitar.

Tim Wheeler (http://guitargeek.com/rigview/528/) from Ash (http://www.ash-official.com) was the guitarist/singer/songwriter who made me want to play guitar and be in a band. The solo to Girl From Mars was the first guitar solo that gave me that feeling. After I heard their debut album (1977), I got a guitar for Christmas.
He's still one of my favourite guitarists, it all seems so effortless watching him solo.

That's a great list. Prince is an underrated guitar player, mainly because he does everything so well (songwriter/producer/singer/keyboards/drums . . .). I've loved Ben Harper's stuff for years. SRV has a great Strat sound, and was really tasty for such an over-the-top player. I heard "Kid Funkadelic" play 'Maggot Brain' when I saw P-Funk this summer. I yelled it out, he heard me and the band went right into it! :D Fred McDowell and Muddy Waters ('nuff said), and Jimmy Page is underrated for *everything*, not just slide. The fact that he produced *all* of Led Zeppelin's records tells you what that guy is capable of!

it's so nice to hear people compliment Prince... I think he's fantastic. Not a virtuoso like Stevie Ray but certainly melodic and funky as all heck.. Has anyone heard "The Undertaker"? One of the greatest guitar albums imo... noone has really heard it coz it was never released... Prince on guitar in a power trio doing Rolling stones covers and 15 minute blues jams. And the tones... oh mi god ... heavenly otherworldly inimitable...

As far as guitarists go, I guess SRV is my hero. I also like Randy Rhoads. I know they are not with us anymore, but they had a huge impact on me playing the guitar. The funny thing is I don't play music by either of them. They just got me started. I LOVE Edwin McCain. He isn't a flashy lead guitarist, but he can write some excellent songs and his voice is just "out-of-this-world".

I actually started playing guitar because I wanted to play Offspring songs! so I guess noodles was my first hero
Now my hero is Omar rodriguez Lopez from the mars volta and at the drive-in.. mainly because of his song writing.
Guy Piccioto and Ian McKaye are my heros (guitar and otherwise) in terms of respectability and (doing what they want).. can't think of the appropriate word right now...
I really like how jimmy page played... what a punk rocker
Red Fred, what is that thing in your avatar? I've seen that in this picture that says "everytime you masturbate, god kills a kitten".. just curious

My Top 3 Guitar heroes (in no order) :
The Edge (U2)
Phil Keaggy
Mark Lee (Third Day)
Jonny Greenwood
Thom Yorke
Kurt Cobain - These three are probably my earliest guitar hero's, i maybe wouldn't have picked up a guitar if id hadn't been for them.
Stuart Braithwaite - When i listen to Ithica it still gives me chills!
Malcolm Middleton - listen to the overdrive sounds on Mad For Sadness, i haven't heard anything like that before or since. He also creates some really heart-wrenching melodies.

First of all, I was Jimi Hendrix in my former life.:p Nobody has mentioned Carlos Santana, he's another legend. Along with Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZtop, and some others. I really like Jimi Hendrix & Jim Morrison in Voices, it's catchy. Eric Clapton is good, but he's not my style, I prefer Hendrix, with his fast paced...lead note by note style, although he was a superhuman rhythm player as well.

when i first started it was probably Kirk and James from Metallica, Angus from AC/DC, and probably Head and Munky from Korn.
now, it's still Kirk and James from Metallica, but also there's Jesper and Bjorn from In Flames, Kerry King from Slayer (the man isn't the greatest soloist in the world but he has come cool ass sounding solos that someone can aspire too), Jon Donais from Shadows Fall, Zakk Wylde (i owe a lot of my playing style to him), and Dimebag Darrel. i also like David Gilmour, the guys from Meshuggah, and Adam Jones from Tool just because they all bring something interesting to the table in terms of guitar playing and song writting (Gilmour using extensive amounts of delay and phasing effects to create that spacey sound. Jones taking progressive rock and mixing it with a dark, atmospheric sound that bands try to mimic but tend to fail at it. and the guys from Meshuggah just do some weird, out there **** with the melodies they write and even their soloing is very weird as well, but in a cool way.)

my heros:
Dean Ween, love his tone and use of effects, super creative.
Adam Jones: over the top power, lots of emotion
Jerry Garcia: he had a great sound and was always learning new scales and progressions. i miss jerry.
i have lots others but this is just a short list

Howdy!
Newbie here but a long time lurker.
Other than the standard guys everyone picked, here are a few that have influenced my playing.
- Gary Rossington of Skynyrd. His tone was awesome and somewhat unique. LP straight into a tube Peavey (here's one for the Peavey lovers) with basically no effects (also one for the purist). He is responsible for countless killer riffs, brilliant leads and also some really good slide work.
- Brad Nowell of Sublime. I love the reggae influence in his stuff.
- Warren Haynes - I've seen him live many times with Gov't Mule, The ABB, Phil Lesh and Friends, solo acoustic and will see him at Red Rocks with The Dead this summer. Awesome tone. Unbelievable versatility. If anyone can pull off Jerry, Warren can.
Rig post coming soon.

To be totally honest the guitar player that has tought me more about guitar playing than any other guitar player is Billie Joe from Greenday. Most guitar players play rhythm 97 percent of the time compared to lead. Billie Joe made me a great rhythm player. I'm better than most people I've played with. Pounding on Greenday songs when I was really getting into guitar made me better at rhythm in all playing styles. What do you guys think?
