View Full Version : Bass dist
Whats a good distortion for fattening up a bass sound? I'm looking for something really heavy that can easily pick up the slack for the guitar if nessciary.

Right now I use an Ibanez PD-7 Phat Hed Dist. and I love it, it takes a little while to find a certain sound that your looking for, but when you find it its perfect. And it does have a very good heavy sound. I get a lot of comments when I play chords on my bass that it sounds like a seven string through a stack. Anywasy hope I helped.

my bassist uses an ODB-3 and i think it sounds really cool. bass tone is much more subtle than guitar tone (my opinion anyway), and i think it works good for it. unless you're extremely picky about your bass tone, i think you'll be pleased with it. the boss can do some subtle (oops already used that word, my writing teacher would be mad) stuff, as well as really saturated heavy sounding stuff (sounds like it to me, its all subjective)
proco make a bass rat (called a juggernaut i believe) and a lot of people use a big muff i think as well. ive never tried/heard them on bass, though. just some others you can look into. guru's is going cheap (last time i checked anyway) on ebay if you want the muff

I've heard of many people using a Big Muff Pi for bass and I have never heard anything bad about them. Especially the Russian model, a good friend of mine usees that and its great for his tone. It can go heavy but its got a very intersting tone when used on bass.
I also use A green Russian Bigg Muff. Whenever I turn it on, the meat comes up big time!!!!
You should also try Boss Mega Distortion. I dint played with it but I heard sound samples of a bass with the pedal-it's absolutely kicks ass!!

guru's Big Muff isn't going cheap anymore, I got it!
I've tried my Marshall Guv'nor, ProCo Rat 2 and MXR Distortion+ out with my brother's Epiphone Thunderbird Bass. the Rat is a little thin for Bass, the MXR sounded like crap on the Bass. the Guv'nor was really good, not surprisingly condsidering Tim from Rage Against The Machine used one. I haven't tried a Big Muff with the Bas yet but from what I know it should sound good, maybe even better than the Guv'nor.
The Budda Phatbass is really nice but it's not cheap.

I agree, the Big MUFF Pi on bass gives killer tone, especially the russian model ( smaller black unit) and not the new addition.

i recommend the BOSS DS-2 (Turbo Distortion), you can use it on a bass and it sounds really cool :D
