View Full Version : radiohead - no haters please
the bends and hail to the thief... i find these 2 cds keep ending up in my stereo. i'm not sure what it is about HTTT that makes me keep listening... i generally dont like radiohead. also in my stereo... morcheeba, royksopp, and some local bands.
anyway... i thought i'd post a poll of which radiohead cd everyone likes best!
I like all their cds, really (though Pablo Honey's a bit spotty - good mixed with not so good). Kid A & Amnesiac needed a bit of time to grow on me, but now I really like 'em, and Hail to the Thief sounds great after a few listens. And "Just", "Fake Plastic Trees", etc. are awesome from the Bends.
But OK Computer's my favorite. Part of this might be due to the fact that I started getting into them just before that album came out, so my introduction to the whole Radiohead sound was with that cd. But it's got such a great group of songs on it that I'd probably like it best anyway.

I am not a huge Radiohead fan - they are good, dont get me wrong - just don't have all of the elements I need.
The Bends - some great tracks on that one...

i never liked radiohead much... i stole my room mates hail to the thief cd and there are some very good songs.. but there are also some i dont like at all. radiohead albums have always been that way to me. i can find two songs i really like. and the rest seems like filler, or just sub par...

this is a very tough question...this band is the best in the world...by quite a long way....
their music and albums represent a true journey of a band....I believe each is special and I cannot seperate them.
Althougn Amnesiac is taking my mind at the moment.

OK Computer. That's going to be the one that goes down as one of the definitive rock albums of the '90s. It's the happy medium between the ambitiousness of Kid A and traditional pop/rock sensibilities of The Bends.

i'd love to hear what great music you listen to? prolly zakk wylde or somthing to that effect right?
From your sig...
I find it interesting, how the new radiohead ablum "hail to the theif" that was leaked 10 months before release, sold 300,000 albums in its first week, more than the previous 2 albums that werent leaked, yet the major record companys bitch about how downloaded music and napster and all jazz is hurting record sales....*scratchs chin*
Not that I'm defending the poor music companies against the evils of Napters et. al., I'm not, but there's more to this issue than you are pondering.
So, okay, lets see what else there is.
Hail To The Thief was leaked about 2 months max before release, any other versions of the tracks were live bootlegs.
both Amnesiac and Kid A were leaked before release as well, as it was the leak of Amnesiac that made me not buy it, because I discovered how crap the album was.
Hail to the Thief was also the most hyped release Radiohead has ever made. You couldn't turn a corner without seeing some form of Radiohead advert, whether it was from posters on billboards, adverts on TV, even duct tape at other bands concerts were advertising Hail To The Thief. Every music station (in the UK at least) had been running Radiohead week before the albums release, with nearly a live show every night on TV. The power of advertising is incredible, as many people I know, who wouldn't touch guitar pop music, let alone the kind of semi-guitar-pop that Radiohead play have been singing the bands praises, and are now rushing out to buy everything they can lay their hands on.
Kid A had very little advertising, and had no single, Amnesiac had a little more advertising and a poor single (Pyramid Song, eww, come on...), whereas Hail To The Thief had a much stronger single that had constant radio play for about 6 weeks before the album was released.
So, as you can see, to say "Napster helps music sales, look at the release of Hail To The Thief as proof" is just as short sighted as saying "Naptser hinders music sales"
i meant to say 10 weeks not ten months, sorry, brain fart

But by ignoring all the other factors your point just makes you look ignorant.
I have attempted to inform you of the missing pieces of the picture, so that you don't have to ponder so much, but you can stick your head in the sand and ignore it all you want.

Chill out, dawg. It's simply a discussion about Radiohead ... A rock band, not a debate that has any consequence about anything important.
I think you should get some more posts under your belt and actually get a feel for the mood and culture of Guitargeek before you start in with the attitude. We try *very* hard to not make this like the other guitar boards on the net. Would you appreciate it if I came to your house and started degraded you for your opinion about a rock band?

I didn't degrade someone for their opinion of a rock band.
The original person said he was wondering about something, I pointed out the opther factors in an attempt to help clarify the situation, he told me he didn't really care about them, possibly because it ruined the point he was trying to make, and I said that it made him look stupid.
But hey, I only signed up to try to correct him about those points, which I have attempted to do, its up to him to take them or leave them, but he needs to know the consequences of ignoring them...and that is looking stupid.

Saying somebody looks stupid is degrading them. And he didn't say he didn't care about your points. He just said it wasn't important enough to argue about.

Actually, I don't think he looks stupid at all. He just made a simple observation and wasn't trying to make any important point.
I can see wanted to correct somebody if the debate was dealing with more important topics like nuclear weapons proliferation or child slavery. But from the point of view of a casual observer, you look a little foolish for signing up just to correct somebody's opinion about the record sales of a rock band.
anyways, You could have easily made your same point and corrected his without the abusive langauge.

I agree. I'm not a radiohead fan, really. I have the stuff from OKC and before but I'm not really a fan of the stuff after OKC. And I think my taste in music is pretty eclectic.

wow...lol, people...i wasnt offended or anything, and i realized my opinion was a little nieve, therefore taking the comment out of my signature, but my opinion stands that large record companys have overeacted about the distributation of music online illegally
but thankyou nobody for standing up for my integrity

With all due respect, can you please be respectful of this forum and it's members. We make a conscience attempt to keep this forum very easy-going and light-hearted. All the other guitar forums on the net suck because of people who aren't aware or just don't care to respect the particular character and culture of the forum and it's long-time members.
We do welcome argumentation and debate, but I just think your tone was a bit too brash for being your first post. You should get to know the folks here before you start spitting such venom. You understand, don't you?
honestly, i'm disturbed by the fact that the title of the post here is "radiohead - no haters please" and it turned into a heated debate about something trivial and somewhat unrelated. it seemed a lot of people are interested in radiohead, so i thought i'd post a thread where people could talk about radiohead intelligently and not take abuse. so lets get back on track people. how bout a new question in addition to the fav cd one: what is your favorite radiohead track ever? i'm not even going to try to answer this for now, since radiohead has so many different sounds...
ps... ninjadj: you're sig says "musicians are cowards". i'm trying to be as diplomatic as i can, but if you're still here for some reason get off this website if that's how you feel. this site is made for musicians, and you DEGRADE us all by calling us cowards.

Its from a song.
By The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra And Tra La La Band
Called The Triumph Of Our Tired Eyes.
If you don't know it, I would recommend it. Very nice.
A song that features a rant on how musicians (a category in which I include myself, so am fully aware of the implications of saying it) are cowards, and just spend their time discussing unimportant things, (such as what bands they like, which Radiohead CD is the best, etc) and how they talk about the future and how good it could be, but usually do absolutely nothing practical to achieve those dreams. The end of the song has an appeal "So come on friends, to the barricades again".
And FWIW, I would count trying to inform someone about somethings they may not have thought about is slightly (but not much) less trivial than "What Radiohead album do you like most?" (OK Computer, then The Bends, then Kid A/Pablo Honey/Hail To The Thief (depending on the mode), then the live one, then anything else that isn't Amnesiac) or "What is your favourite Radiohead song of all time?" (Polyethylene Pt 2 or Man o' War at the moment, but again, it'll change with my mode).
But each to their own.

It wasn't what you were saying it was *HOW* you said it. You don't have to say somebody has their head in the sand and looks stupid to make your point.

Really?
Would people have paid as much attention?
I doubt it, but that wasn't what the original person had complained about.
They complained that this thread had turned into one talking about trivialities, rather than what the best radiohead album is.

Doesn't matter. *My* compliant is with how you presented your argument. I'm all for good honest intellectual discourse about many subjects, but when it's presented in the manner that if the person doesn't agree with you, they have their heads in the sand, then you are no longer debating, but throwing out insults.

It wasn't a case of disagreeing with me. In matters of opinion, that is fine (and, as I tried to make it very clear, I actually held the same opinion).
These were facts that the person was ignoring. When they weren't ignored, the persons argument (if not the opinion) changed and in the end, it did change.
That is why I said they had their head in the sand, not because they held a different opinion to mine (which they didn't).
NB: None of the posts I made were made with malice, vemon, hatred, but with the simple aim to correct and educate.
Have I got enough posts under my belt yet?
How many is a good number for you?

I agree with your points and I agree that his opinion was not fully informed. But none of our opinions are fully informed, that's why they are opinions. I appreciate your desire to show people other ways to think about things and show them details they might have omitted. That's all great.
My argument is, that you don't have to resort to saying somebody has their head in the sand and that they are looking stupid for expressing such an opinion. An uninformed opinion isn't necessarily a result of stupidity or a buried head.
Now, I hope you can see how I am just making an attempt to correct you and help you see other facts that I believe you are ignoring. ;)

i'll have to check out flynova...
i heard one Greenwheel song on the point sometime and thought it was pretty good. very accessible and unlike most of the crap that local bands are putting out here.
i'm going to put a band together hopefully by the end of summer... i think it could be a good group if everything comes together well.
my favorite radiohead song is a tie between "Exit Music" off of OK Computer and "Paranoid Android" of the same album.

i think i may have narrowed my search for my fav radiohead track - its either "fake plastic trees" "bones" "a wolf at the door" or, probably #1 "where i end and you begin (the sky is falling in)"
where i end is romantic, groovy, and weird all at the same time... it gives me goosebumps!!
