Phish (or any other jam band I need to hear, i really havent heard much of their stuff) there's a gazillion cds, and im quite overwhelmed.. studio or live, i dont care

You're lucky, of the bands you listed that I dig (The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and At The Drive In), all of them have relatively small catalogues.

The VU only had 4 real albums - The Velvet Underground and Nico, White Light/White Heat, The Velvet Underground, and Loaded. All 4 were brilliant in my opinion, they do have some odds and ends besides those 4 albums but that'll suffice for now.

My Bloody Valentine only had 3 full length albums. 2 of which are still widely available and those two are supposedly the best (I'm still scouring the internet for a copy of their first). Loveless is their best work but Isn't Anything isn't bad at all. They have two singles that are still around (Glider and Tremolo) so you could pick those up legit if you like those two albums. (Note: Loveless is one of my all time, top 10 favorite albums)

I've only heard a little of At The Drive-In but what I heard I liked. Their last album Relationship of Command is considered their best work.

They released 4 albums actually. Their first, "This is Your Bloody Valentine", is horrible. They had a different singer and were really nothing like the MBV we know today. Their second, "Ecstasy and Wine" is actually pretty good 60s influenced guitar pop.

Then there was "Isn't Anything" and "Loveless". Which are both great but "loveless" is *the* album that every one talks about and man, is it just not genius?

You're Living All Over Me is excellent and a good starting point. But their sound definitely progressed through their career. Other notable albumes are: Green Mind and Where You Been.

Phish and MBV? wow. that's an interesting combo. but, yes, Loveless is one of awesomest albums ever recorded. It's especially great for guitarists. Shields will blow your mind in a different way than Anastasio will (he doesn't really play in the box). And i love a good mind***k. =)

Definitely give "Loveless" a listen. First time I heard it, I was blown away right from those first 4 snare hits.

loveless and isn't anything are defenitley essential MBV, but check out the tremolo and glider eps as well. the title track on the latter is pure sonic indulgent bliss.

the velvet underground's first album is pretty ecletic, the second, white light/white heat is pretty much the foundation (imo anyway) for what we now call "noise rock." both are great though.

with dinosaur jr, i can only recommend you're living all over me 'cause that's the only one i have. i've been meaning to get more myself.

old rush is best. check out the self-titled and hemispheres, and maybe the live album all the world's a stage.

as for jam bands, just go get live at fillmore east by the allman brothers. in fact, everyone who even thinks they know anything about jam bands should own that album.

Ecstacy and Wine is just two of their EPs (Strawberry Wine, and Ecstacy) on one disc.

Dinosaur Junior rawks! Download 'freak scene'! It starts as a catchy pop song with vocals that sound like you would if you were dead. If you've checked out J Mascis's rig on here, you'll notice he has quite a few fuzzes. On this song you get to here some of that on a killer bridge riff.
