View Full Version : What are you listening too this week?

For some reason I have regressed.

I am still listening to EARTH-2, BORIS-Heavy Rocks, The Flood (Hey nobody, this is a great post rock album and is worth a look, at least I am really enjoying it), and the new Melt Banana-Cell Scape (Which is excellent, if you like melt banana....it has something that could be call a "POP" song, it even has a minor 7th in it, and a acoustic guitar). I am also Listening to Masonna, Space Machine (Amazing Modular synth stuff), and Merbow.

Looks like I'm running low on atmospheric guitar this week, and heavy on Japanese stuff.

Definitely. His songs have great hooks as well as unique arrangements. I have "Things Like This Help Me" stuck in my head.

Do you know of any sites with info on his gear?

Not really. But I know about some of it. Recording, he uses a bunch of different things, so it's impossible to know for sure. But I've seen them live quite a few times. His gear has changed over the time. I used to use a Jazzmaster RI and a blackface bassman, but I've also seen him with a Les Paul Recording and Line 6 Flextone. The last time a saw him, about 2 weeks ago he had a beautiful Ebony LP Custom and Fender Deluxe Reverb RI. For pedals he uses a Boss PN-2, TU-2, RV-2 and various distortions or he just uses the amp overdrive.

This week I'm stuck on "Revolver"

a local radio station played the 25 greatest/most influential albums ever in rock recently -- and they actually played albums -- kind of a cool gimmick -- i was driving down south and listening to them play Revolver til i lost the signal -- then pulled out my tape and picked up from there -- been stuck on it since :)

I joined this mix club for this month so had to make a mix (made up of relatively accessible rock), which I have been listening to today. It has: Hefner, The Exploding Hearts, Spiritualized, Modest Mouse, Brian Eno, Devo, The Wrens, Mercury Rev, Ted Leo, Frank Black, Sufjan Stevens, and Enemy Love.

Otherwise, I have been going on a Beach Boys kick the past few days.

I wouldn't say they all sound the same but there's a definite Franz Ferdinand sound and the album has a strong uniformity. To me that's a good thing: it's along time since I've heard a new album that actually sounds like an album rather than a collection of songs played by the same band.

Having said that there are three songs in the middle that are a little too similiar to go next to each other but it picks up again towards the end.

Even though there is a uniformity and sometimes a little repetition what you can hear on every track is the band's enthusiasm, exitement and sheer joy for playing their music. The album also convey's the bands personality pretty well (and a pop band with personality is rare thing indeed). So while the music can be accused of 'saminess' there is an energy that carries you past that, there are also some clever, humurous, and sexy lyrics that add interest. "Michael" is the sexiest song I've heard a bunch of skinny white boys sing in along time, And "The Dark of The Matinee" could have been written about the first few weeks of my relationship with my girlfriend. Some of the other lyrics also fire of big blue sparks of recognition and most importantly raise a smile now and again.

It's odd but I've listened to this album at least once everyday since it came out and I'm just not bored of it. I've also seem them live three times and they have a definite presence and charm of their own.

I've got a friend who's obsessed with them but I don't really get it, I liked Take Me Out but I don't like that Uniformity that you talked about. I'm the opposite, I like an album to be a collection which varies. If I wanted to hear the same song 11 times I'd just hit repeat.

I am totally the opposite, I like Franz Ferdinand but that album got old reeeeally fast. There just wasn't enough variety, and practicly zero depth...I just need a little more than catchy progressions and A disco beat (notice the tempo on practicly all the tracks is the same...was that intentional? Does it matter? Probably not on a dancefloor which is where they were intended.)
