I'm quite shallow... And want to learn some songs to play on acoustic guitar that'll impress people (especially laydeezz). Can anyone reccomend a few? Ive mastered blackbird, and that always goes down well. But I'm struggling to think of any more.
Thanks

How about some classical stuff like greensleeves(mozart), or maybe fur elise(beethoven). Those songs are great for acoustic guitar and people know them and love them.

You'll turn EVERYONE'S head if you can play "Song for George" by Eric Johnson off of "Ah Via Musicom". That's one that you just keep trying to play for years and get it eventually. As for attracting ladeez ....
-"More Than Words" by Extreme
-"Change the World" by Babyface and Eric Clapton
-"I Miss You" by Incubus
Say what you will about the songs themselves, they work like buttah. And the Babyface one is actually a really awesome soul-music chord progression.
Ladies, if you can play anything other than Ani DiFranco or Jewel songs, guys will most certainly pay attention. I saw a girl play "Iron Man" at a party once and she got plenty of attention.

secretly, you all kind of like it, so just come out and admit it. it's a good song..

i don't know about England... but a lot of college-aged folk around here seem to dig anything by Dave Matthews.

For some reason, some people like to hear oldies. I know that whenever I hear someone playing one, I pay more attentions to them.
Weird.
i've gotten alot of attention with Pinball wizard by the Who for some reason, its a really easy song

Dude, if I saw a girl at a party playing Iron Man, for sure I'd be giving her A LOT of attention too!
I went speachless just last week after this amazing girl pulled up next to me blasting Chamaira. It was one of those times where you go to say something and just choke. Does remind you how good it is to be alive though!
Dude, learn any cheesy love song and get that eye contact going with the ladies. Never fails. Cheers!

Street Spirit by Radiohead, atleast when I play that it turns heads.
Me too! Thom Yorke's fun to sing along with (if you can hit the notes, which I usually can). "Fake Plastic Trees" works too.
If you can sing 'em Jeff Buckley songs are a lot of fun too. I've got "Lover, You Should've Come Over", "Mojo Pin", and "Hallelujah" under my belt, and people have said nice things about them when I play.
I've also been having fun with "I've Just Seen a Face" by the Beatles. (I played it at a show in a local park a few weeks ago and could barely keep from laughing at a local bum who sang along. He knew all the words! I credited him with backing vocals.)
if you have a friend who plays the violin, "love song for my mom" by moby will make people love both of you

Man, i cannot count how many times i delivered pizzas to dorms where fat, grotesquely hideous frat boys would slop out a pathetic cover of Dave Matthews and they had throngs of awestruck, large mammaried females drooling over them. I had to choke back the vomit.
So learn that and some John Mayer or BBMak or whatever, and you'll rake in the others with indiscriminate musical taste.

I'm not a sissy...I like Incubus and Rage and lots of modern rock. BUT....NOBODY who has even one ounce of musical knowledge can dog Dave Mathews Band...C'Mon all those guys are incredible. Stop being so Macho Homophobic "Korn Rules!" and appreciate real, complex, musical talent at work!...I feel much better.

Hmm. I know someone that always plays "Time of Your Life" by Green Day and "Sweet Home Alabama". I leave the room when he plays either. To impress people, try playing the fast riff in "Fracture" by King Crimson or play "Master of Puppets" by Metallica. It sounds harder than it is to people that don't play guitar, especially if you play it with alternate pickstrokes as opposed to downstrokes. Again, non- players won't be able to tell the difference.

Here's a few more:
December by Collective Soul
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
She Talks to Angels by The Black Crowes
That last one's a little harder because it's played in an alternate tuning, but it's equally impressive.

For me, it's "Is There Anybody Out There?" by Pink Floyd (my trademark...something about arpeggios just grabs peoples' attention), "Blackbird" by the Beatles (again, not very difficult to learn, but it sounds really complex to the non-musician), and "Street Spirit" by Radiohead. On electric guitar, it's definitely "Little Wing" and some Gilmour solos.
Not that I get the opportunity to impress people with my playing, though.

i know what you mean. im 15 and everyone seems to think i listen to and play nu-metal. i listen to a wide range of music, so i do know some nu-metal and even some pop songs, but i much prefer to play stuff like stairway. or a classical song like fur elise or moonlight sonata.

I find it's more accurate sounding with a pick. I just use up and down strokes.

claptons tears in heaven is good to most of the girls around here actually know it so it turns there heads
grunge grl
06.29.03, 1:54 AM
okay, speaking about those girls who don't know how to play the guitar... they'll love almost any acoustic song as long as the one who's performing the songs does it well! But songs that get special attention would be more than words (this song is the ultimate hook for girls, who absolutely love this though they don't know why), layla and tears in heaven, i'll be by edwin mccain... stuff from dave matthews and dashboard confessional. And any cheesy pop song that obviously is about a guy in love with a girl and will love her forever... that does the trick. as long as the song has "love" and "forever" or other mushy stuff, then girls will almost always be drawn to it! as long as you look at them while your playing and make it seem like you're singing exclusively only for them! chicks dig that stuff. They want your attention during the song as much as you want theirs. For girls like these, you gotta have some looks or at least be "cute" or whatever.
from the the girls who do know how to play acoustic guitar... we appreciate guys who can pull off old classics from the who (like pinball wizard), stuff from black sabbath, pink floyd, led zeppelin, the beatles, and solo artists like jim croce and johhny cash. We like guys who can play more complicated songs than the basic 4 or 3 chord song. As long as you know the whole song! Then if you sit around a while and try to teach us... that is the best thing you can do... it might be frustrating but some girls don't really want to learn the song... it's just an excuse to get to know you better. And some girls do want to learn the song and that leads to dates... Girls like us don't give much for looks... we're too busy looking at your fingers and figuring out how you pulled that one off. That's one way you tell is a girl knows how to play the guitar... we look at your hands a lot.

Hmmm good question.
Probably a classical piece which I learnt when i was 15 which is called Asturias (Leyenda) by Isaac Albeniz. It isn't all that hard to do if you are taught classical correctly and it sounds pretty impressive or so I'm told.
The hardest piece to play that I know which also gets attention is "Sevilla" which is actually composed by the same guy as the above piece. When I first looked at the music I was panicking.
To get chicks I dunno what I would play, probably some funky stuff? I dunno the intro to thunderstruck?

Dudes, the funniest song ever to play is "The Entertainer" (If you don't know what song that is, it's the one played in the background while homer gets chased around New York by the pimp on The Simpsons) traditionally played on piano, but it's absolutely hilarious when you play it on the guitar!

You know what....almost everytime I go into a guitar shop into the acoustic guitar section.....there ALWAYS someone playing the beginning of 'Blackbird' by the Beatles. I didn't know why until I talked to me teacher about it and he said that it's one of the songs they usually teach when they learn about fingerpicking.
I think it's a nice song. I don't know if it'll impress anyone though. haha

another good beatles song that most of you might not have heard of is dear prudence....it also has finger or travis picking in it...its a really good song and whenever i play it for someone theyve never heard it before but on acoustic it always makes them keep listening
and stairway to heaven(the whole thing) i play my own variation of the solo since i cant really bend that high on an acoustic....but if you play the whole thing to a girlfriend you can usually put them to sleep calmly(just every minute or so look up and you can see them sorta melting away at the music)

the theme song for the pink panther!!!!
(the cartoon)
they had it tabbed in full in the march addition of TOTAL GUITAR (europe)
i have not started trying to work it out yet, as every time i try to look at the sheet music i cringe and shudder and wonder how many days it will take me to learn it.
how does the original power rangers theme go again?
and the DRAGONBALLZ THEME is hell easy, it went down very well when my band played it live. (i'm 13 by the way)
we rocked that place.

sick cycle carousel - lifehouse
wherever you will go - the calling

those are my favorites.

Street Spirit's a definite yes!
Probably the only song my girlfriend actually heard from another room and came into the bedroom to listen to me play it...
Others:
Nirvana - About a girl
Queen - Crazy little thing called love
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Metallica - Nothing else matters
Nice mix there...

There are two songs that you need to know
Mexico - Incubus
and
Vicotoria - John Mayer
Yes -- Intro to "Roundabout." (The part w/ the harmonics).
Zep -- "Over the Hills and Far Away." (WARNING -- this song might be forbidden in your local music store).
John Mayer -- "Why Georgia"
Lenny Kravitz -- "Always on the Run."
Incubus -- "Talk Shows on Mute."
Hendix -- "Lttle Wing"
There's an obscure song by Indigo Girls called "Fare thee Well." It's an incredible finger-picking song, capo'd on 6, in double drop-D.

Holy alternate tunings Batman, it's Song For George!
I learned that song for an audition about 10 years ago, I must have played it 20 times a day for a month. That was intense.
Eric Johnson is the man.

I think "Mexican Americans" by Cheech and Chong would be mighty impressive.

I've been to a few (pretensious) guitar stores in Boston and NYC that have a big sign up listing songs that you can't play there: (1) Stairway; (2) Blackbird; (3) Smoke on the Water; (4) Iron Man; (5) OTH&FA, etc.
Typical guitar store BS. I guess they're trying to be funny.

yeah i always here people playin those same songs whenever i'm in one.......mostly stairway and blackbird
ELLIOTT SMITH!!! Ok let me break this down Elliott Smith if you can sing (and i mean really sing) has a library of great eloquent music that will make chicks swoon. Alright some songs....
Rose Parade, Alameda, Son of Sam, Angles, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT SONG OF ALL: Between the Bars
If you can bust out any of these you win.
Yeah, 'street spirit', 'blackbird', 'little wing', 'castles made of sand' and stuff like that always go down well.
In the early nineties, i could always make heads turn with a guitar+voice version of 'more than words'.
My favourite at the moment has to be 'the rain song'. I can play the damn thing, but there are so many chord changes that each time i always end up forgetting what's next at some point ...

I saw a guy do a solo acoustic version of "Devil Went Down To Georgia". Sounded incredible. He used a bullet mic on the floor and tapped it with his foot for a bass drum sound. We all sat there with our jaws on the floor. Frickin' unreal. His name is Michael Rayburn, grab a copy of the song if you can, its worth a listen.

For the record, 'Hallelujah' was written by Leonard Cohen. Jeff Buckley just covered it rather well. Bono did a weird version of it too.
I do Cohen covers (Coming back to you, Famous Blue Raincoat), and yes, 'More than words'. I learned it as a playing exercise, although I despise the jockish sentiment.
Friends of mine have had tremendous success with 'Tears in Heaven' and 'Don't dream it's over' (Crowded House).
If you want attention from a group of girls play Lisa Loeb-Stay and they will all sing along.

Despite being more an electric player, I have been at school for 7-8 months of the year for the last three years, and I fully acknowledge this dilemma of "What song to play?" for people at parties, campfires, brothels (I mean... what?).
Two things:
1. People are generally more responsive to songs with lyrics. Sad but true... but then again, why do you think lead singers get so much friggin' attention? I found myself reduced to playing "Wonderwall" on the metro last week because it was the only thing my friends could remember the words to (and while I wish it weren't true, most of the other people on the train started singing. I should probably just shoot myself and end this post).
2. If you can't sing (like me), find guitar songs that have a strong percussive element to them, so that they don't sound weak and lacking in that department. I tend to add in a lot of chokes and dead strings to songs when I play them on acoustic without any accompaniment.
This has probably been said before, but what type of people depends on what will impress them.
learn some dispatch and some O.A.R., they always go over well on acoustic sets or if your just jamming a bit towards the end of a party or something.
The General- Dispatch
Carry you- Dispatch
City on Down- O.A.R.
Hey Girl- O.A.R
About an Hour Ago- O.A.R. (they always really like this one, i really dont no why)
fingerstyle with lots of slapping, popping, harmonics, precussive hits, and two handed tapping.

Great question/topic. there are so many great songs for ladies. Some of my favorites:
Dave - Crash
Jason Mraz - Remedy or You and I both
Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (i think. city of angels)
Dog's Eye View - Umbrella (winner)
I also like blackbird
Man this could go on forever.
To be impressive, one song comes to mind:
Jack Johnson - Taylor
the intro is nice!

I've never tried to play The Clap but it sounds like it would be a tough one...glad to see more Butler fans out there....Sunrise Over Sea is an incredible album..
As for a song that impressed me when I first heard it (and confounded my fingers when I tried to play it) is "Road to Nash Vegas" played by Dan Tyminski (sp?) on the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD.

I don't know about you, but I've got an original that makes girls slither on up to me and listen, it works like a charm.
Some other ideas are:
Two Coins- Dispatch
Everybody Hurts - R.E.M.
Every Breath You Take- The Police
It's a hit or miss thing on alot of these songs that people have mentioned.

I think Incubus's I Miss you just on acoustic and singing is pretty much a sure bet if you can do it good. And it's not all that hard of a song at all to sing and play either..

That's a great song. Both of those guys were kicking ass on those two they played on the dvd.
