View Full Version : weird fender

ok, my guitar teacher in 1995 had a blue fender flying v type guitar. I remember him saying it was quite rare and not very many were made. I also remember it was very very nice, and (I think?) it was a metalic dark blue colour.
Anyone know what this guitar was called? It had a weird name maybe...?

Yes.....A Fender Katana. They made two versions, a set neck on and a bolt on neck. The set neck was a pretty nice guitar and the bolt on was.....well......Squier. They only made them for about a year or two, and discontinued them. There was another odd duck in the bunch known as a Performer. It looked like some George Jetsonized Strat, but it played great, and came in this cool green colour. It died a quick death as well.....

I remember reading about that in some Fender book. It was their attempt at making it in the metal genre, and it failed miserably. They should really stick to the classics, because that's all they seem to do well.
Those guitars were produced for a year in the 80s in japan, to cater to the 80's hard rock scene i'm guessing, i'm not to fond of the fender katana, but the fender peformer looks intriguing

you know, once you get past the looks, katanas are actually great guitars. like all of the japanese fenders, they play MUCH MUCH better than the ilk that carries the "fender"name these days (rest in peace, leo).
i bought my first katana in 7th grade, NEW, for $179 WITH a hard shell case! i used it through high school, college, and beyond. it was later stolen from my van in tempe, az...
i recently bought another from ebay and was able to get it for CHEEEEEP because it had a neck repair. it plays great, but the repair is as ugly as i am.
when i pulled it out of the case, i instantly realized that this was the neck by which i judged ALL other necks! it plays very very well. WAY better than a crummy MIM strat, any day.
granted the pickups are a bit meek, but that is fixed quickly enough. people look at my guitar when i pull it out and think i am going to shred. well, with a fralin split tele in the neck and a boutique pearly in the bridge, they couldn't be farther from the truth!
with these pickup upgrades, i can sound as bluesy as you wish you could! and it is so funny the looks i get and the comments after the show! hilarious!
neck through body = sustain. and the tone is to die for. i have SEVERAL guitars (i buy, sell, and repair music gear for a living). i can pretty much play whatever i want. and this guitar wins ALMOST every time.
yeah it's ugly, but so am i.
so leave us ugly stuff alone. we have feelings too. and if you ever get to play a katana, you will realize, once again, that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
now go to your room.

just cause you and it both are ugly dont mean i have to like the way it looks. i do however think the performer looks cooler. i would play that thing.

you don't HAVE to like it, or anything else for that matter i suppose. i was just saying that they actually are great guitars.
maybe i am just so cool that it doesn't matter what my guitar looks like.
:D
seriously though, they are ugly and horrible and worthless, so anyone reading this who may have one for sale should sell it to me for cheap. i would hate to think of anyone suffering at the hands of this malicious beast.
now don't forget to eat your vegetables and call grandma.

Hell, the Starcaster is a pretty ugly guitar, but it's a intersesting and certainly vaulabe guitar. I would play a Starcaster. The Katana is a interesting looking guitar took, it would deffiantly stand out on stage.
Haha, I don't know, some of those ugly Fenders are really cool. *cough* Courtney Love's signature guitar *cough*.

i have to say i get TONS of compliments and questions about them (i actually have 2  ) after shows, but no one EVER asks about or compliments my strats ...
and i am in no way shape or form in a heavy metal band. i play psychadelic middle eastern space rock! so it looks very out of place.
but back when i played on the street in santa monica, there was an older black guy that played blues on a shiney gibson flying v...
just goes to show that you should listen with your ears and not your fashion sense.

hmmm. doesn't it boil down to how a guitar plays and sounds?
maybe i am just being silly. or maybe i am a musician first and a rockstar model second?
but you should definitely eat your vegetables and call your grandma.
then go to your room and think about what you have done.
and no desert!

I assume he's referring to the Fender Venus, I wouldn't exactly call it a signature model, but she did co-design it with the custom shop.
And away we go. (http://www.tachyonlabs.com/images/venus.gif)

look at the string tree on this (http://www.pbase.com/jroy/image/21997204) starcaster. I dont think i've ever seen a better string tree ever..... altho it'd be better if it didnt need one..... cool guitars nonetheless, the guitarist from the Zutons has a black one which he used at glastonbury.

I was about to bitch about someone reviving a 3 year old thread....
....but there've been more responces than the original so I guess it's alright.
Katana's a cool. Covette (a friend of mine) used to own one back in the 80s.

i think it'd be about time for fender (better yet, squier - cheaper is better) to reissue all those two year run models that nobody ever bought, but everybody covets.
like a katana reissue, the f*cking starcaster (i want one in surf green, white/cream binding, maple fingerboard...hideous yum-yum)
