So how do the geeks design their album covers? Do you keep it consistent from album to album? Does the artwork change how you percieve an artist?

like in theory this thread should have worked...I really don't know what happened, we should ask the professor.

It seemed like a good idea. especially with an EP on the way I thought some opinions might be nice. :(

i hate designing my own things. I always end up hating it. Even tho i have some skills in design [i go to this design\media school]
So hopely when my band are going to release an EP [end of the summer actually] someone else will do it.
I like arty, yet simple covers.
Were I to release an album, I woud follow the lead of The God Machine's One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying: plain white cover, with the artist name and album title centred.

I take a small digital camera pretty much everywhere. Anything that catches my eye, I'll snap it and then photoshop it... altering contrast, adding filters, etc.
I've currently got an obsession with taking pictures of aerials and satellite dishes... check out this promo pic of our band:

I also work in X-Ray radiography so I plan on taking some X-Ray pics of guitars / pedals and using them as cover art.

I like the photography angle myself.
The person who we've just persuaded to do some pics of our band works at the local art college, so he's got some crazy ideas about approach.
We're currently making some pinhole cameras - actually we borrowed that idea from Pearl Jam - the inside cover to Binaural, there's some portrait style pinhole shots of the band.
Also I quite like very close up macro stuff, especially when you can't quite tell what/who the subject is.
Of course, I think, artists are only just beginning to push the limits if the 12cm x 12cm format. Years ago they had an entire album sleeve for a 12" record to work with. Just recently I'ce seen some amazing CD artwork printed on all sorts of material - Sigur Ross was one of them.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of cardboard (recycled obviously) digipack stuff, it's so flexible, the way it folds and moves become part of the design.
Also, a couple of low cost simple ideas I have seen used:
1) Digi pack with a corregated cardboard cover into which the band logo is stamped or die cut.
2) A carboard sleeve, printed with the band name and details by using a rubber stamp and an ink pad.
You can actually get something that looks pretty amazing togther for little outlay these days.

this is a friend of mine who does stuff for a lot of bands. should give inspiration...
For my band's latest release i did illustration manipulated in photoshop. basically i did the drawing in pencil on tracing paper and scanned it in and reversed and duotoned it. good times.
you can see a small pic of the cover at http://www.myspace.com/wydown
you can also see it much larger if you buy our cd, which is available through our website. http://www.wydown.com

Jodrell (sp?) Bank?
Been there.
Unicorns drowning in nutella with a fat kid sucking it up through a straw, the metaphorical value is endless, and come on, the irish rovers lol. Album covers are for sell outs anyways, cd-r in a clear jewel case, done and done.

Personally, I try to rip off of Reid Miles' designs as much as possible. Blue Note cover art was aces.

Yes, it is Jodrell Bank. Well spotted, all you radio telescope geeks!
i don't have a CD out but i do all of my digital art on square backgrounds so i could use it as album covers if i ever need to. i like really simplistic vector stuff. um... here's a little of my artwork (airfall03.deviantart.com), if anyone cares.

Personally, I'm into the very simple album covers. For instance The Cure's, Boys Don't Cry is one of my all time favorites.
