I like that album. Bubblegum pop melodies with neat synths and keyboards. It's lighthearted and fun.

I'm more of a fan of the older lips stuff. Transmissions From the Satellite Heart is my favorite lips album. It features the amazing gutiar work of one Ronald Jones. That guy was the effect king. He had the weirdest boxes, lots of really rare weird stuff. But that album really rocks.
yea i'm looking into their older albums... transmissions seems to be a fav of real fans.
i love all the effects! the screaming track gets kinda annoying after awhile, but it's intriguing: are those actual screams or effects pedals??? i think its both...

Those are effects. Ron was doing all those sounds live, even the stereo stuff.

I've been into the Lips since "the Soft Bulletin" came out - great cd. You'll probably like it if you like "Yoshimi".

Flaming Lips? They've been around forever! Hit to Death in the Future Head (1986 I believe) is friggin' great. Their earlier stuff is more lo-fi experimental (no laptops) nonsensical/surrealistic whimsy...

No, he was pretty secretive. I even asked him in person and refused to tell me everything. I know he had several Eventide Ultra-Harmonizers, several Boss SE-50s, a couple of Oberheim Echoplexes and many weird pedals. One had a yellow thing that he held to the strings and it had a wire that went to the pedal. I have no clue what is was.

That album is 1992. Their first is a self-titled album that is now finally back in print.

I agree that they have talent and original ideas...but they are........ weird??? sounds right to me. but i love their sound... i didnt notice any bleeding on the CD. sounds like he needs to take a look at the guitargeek "technique & theory" forum
If you're into garage rock at all or the flaming lips at all you HAVE to go get "The Punks Are Taking Acid". Its a 3 cd set they put out last year that is basically a compilation of all their pre-major label stuff (about 85-92). It kicks a%s! KICKS A%S!:D

Has anyone heard about the Lips being sued by Cat Stevens? It was because the melody in "Fight Test" supposedly sounded like Cat Steven's "Father and Son," which it does, but its not that close..
