So tell me how you feel about bass players playing leads?

can be good... especially if you play lots of quiet music... or if you put lots of distortion on the bass and play a main riff over and over... type thing...

I think that in alot of cases it's overkill, but in many cases it's nice too.
my band uses a lot of crazy bass stuff. Like strange feedback bass...I think it can add a lot.

leads are fun... but sometimes you just don't need 'em.
i'm not a particularly good lead player, so i keep my "leads" to a minimum.

LOL!
obviously i didn't read the post(s) or the forum title carefully enough... ;)
but, i played a bit of bass in my time... i kept things simple. but i was not adverse to doing a bit of lead.
in my band... i have encouraged my bass player to play more of a quasi-lead sort of style (a la Peter Hook) as opposed to a more traditional style.

Play whatever the song needs and nothing else. If the song needs an 8 minuite solo, then play one.
Entwistle played some pretty damn cool leads.
