View Full Version : IFIC buttons on American Bandstand. What do they stand for?

Many dancers on early AB shows wore a button/pin that read IFIC. I've heard different explanations, such as, that it was a plug for Beechnut gum, with it's flavor-IFIC taste:

But, I believe it is an acronym for: "It's.........."

Any ideas?

Top 3 Google results:

Investment Funds Institute of Canada

International Food Information Council

International Federation of Infection Control

Probably none of these are right, though.

I don't think the acronym has anything to do with gum. But thanks for the "ideas."

The adverb comes before the adjective. "It's incredibly f*cking chewy" would be the correct version.

thanks ben,

I'm also a PhD in English. Grammar is flexible you can move words into non-standard positions to fit a form as long as the meaning remains. If I'd have used the correct grammar the form would have been broken and the comic effect I was going for would have been lost.

Well that's the end of the lecture, for the seminar I want you to find examples of non-standard grammar in the work of Shakespeare, Coleridge, Yeats and Eliot. ;)

You may refer to me as Dr. Spongemonkey if you wish :D

it's not an acronym for anything, the story about the gum is true.

it's the last four letters of "flavorific."

The kids on American Bandstand did in fact come up with their own acronym:
"It's fun, it's chewy."

However, IFIC was ORIGINALLY based on "flavor-ific."
