I just purchased my first piece of rackmount gear.. and I need a bit of a "Tutorial" on how it works..and what I will need in the future. I decided to seperate my confusion into a series of question.. and here they be.

1) Do all racks (As in the rack itself) need a power supply? Or is a power supply for a rack just a convienent way to hook all of the units up and keep them tidy? (I assume each unit comes with a power supply of its own..)

2) Is hooking your guitar up through a rack system any more complicated than say having a few foot pedals? (I just bought a Eventide H3000-B Ultra-Harmonizer.. I don't know what to expect when it gets here. :D)

3) Can someone explain the difference between Mono and Stereo for me please? :D This confuses me a bit as well.

4) Preamps/Power Amps take the PLACE of a...say.. half stack head or are just before the amp? (I assume pre-amp means before amp.. lol)

I'm going for a Fripp sound with this setup, been playing for 6 years.. but don't know anything about rack units other than they spank. I plan on buying another harmonizer, 4 TC Electronic 2290s or D-twos (Check my other thread)

Any help will be useful.

Thanks!

1) Every piece of rack equipment will come with a power cord to plug into an outlet. It will get very messy very quickly though when you have multiple power cords running to a wall outlet. A power supply, like the Furman line, allows you to hook them all to the unit, and run a single power cord to the wall. You also get benefits like power conditioning and surge protection.

2) It can be a little difficult if you aren't used to it, but it's not rocket science.

3) Mono is one signal. Stereo is two signals running in a left/right configuration. This allows you to use stereo effects, or panning.

4) A head contains a preamp and a poweramp. With rack gear, they are separate so that you can mix and match.

Yeah, basically going to split the signal into two different amps (Two delays per cab) for neat pan effects and whatnot.

Four TC 2290 AND an Ultra-Harmonizer:eek:

How on earth can you afford all of that?? Do you like own a small country or something?? I'd be lucky to get one 2290, and I always thought Eventide stuff cost more $ than a ... err.... well, you get the idea...

But I'm sure that setup would sound kick-ass! Good luck with it (and please post some pics when you get it all together)!

No.. I make pretzels for 5 dollars an hour. I simply save up for something I want and buy it. :D

They have discontinued the 2290, so you better hit e-bay.
