View Full Version : The Game(Another rant)
The rapper I mean, I hate him. Hate hate hate.
In his new song he has a line that goes: "I dropped out of my coma in 2001/ bout the same time Dre dropped 2001"
Wow, Dr Dre dropped his album 2001 in 2001. Who would have thought it. Are you even allowed to rhyme the same word twice?
And the coma thing pisses me off too, Its like 50 cent took him aside and said "Listen, no one likes a rapper these days unless they have a horrific injury to their name. I was shot 9 times, you need a "thing". So I was thinking we could take a drive to this cliff I know...Oh you were in a coma? Well thats good too! We can work with this...."
AND THE CHORUS ITSELF PISSES ME OFF "Rushin in this 40 ounce/
Lettin the ink from my pen bleed/
Cuz Marthin Luther King had a (dream)/
Aaliyah had a (dream)/
Left Eye had a (dream)/
So I reached out to Kanye and (brought you all my dream)"
This doesent work. Ok, So Martin Luther King had a "Dream" thats true. If Aliyah or Lisa left eye lopez had any dreams I dont think they were well publicised. What the **** do all these people have in common anyway? Aside from being black and dead I mean. Two singers and a civil rights activist. One shot dead for political reasons, one died in a plane crash the other...I forget right now, but what the **** is the point in referencing them in this song? Is it a tribute? If so shouldnt it be more than one lousy line each in your latest crapfest hit single? Did you know these people? Are you just cashing in on their memory in a cynical attempt to seem meaningful and "for real"? I think so. And who cares if you worked with Kanye west? Is this song anything more than just namedropping? So far all I have seen from this guy is cheap shots for attention. "Look! Its my son! In my video!"
And while I'm at it, 50 cent:
"I'll break it down for you now baby it's simple/
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho"-50 cent, "Candy shop"

There's a ton of indie and old stuff that falls outside of your categories
Check out older stuff like
De La Soul: 3Ft High and Rising
Ultramagnetic MCs: Critical Beatdown
Tribe Called Quest: Low End Theory
Or newer Independant stuff like
Quasimoto: Further Adventures of Lord Quas
Madvillian: Madvilliany
Jurassasic 5: Just about anything is fun
Newer Kool Kieth stuff is rad, but filthy in a way that makes my inner 14 year old giggle.

50 Cent and The Game became completely redundant when they settled their "beef". At least before that we could laugh at them.
On the subject of good rappers, the early Mos Def stuff is great, it's a shame it's all becoming more and more generic sounding now.

I am really liking canadian rap right about now.
K-OS in particular is one of the best spoken and most interesting rap artists out there right now. AND, he plays guitar, bass, and drums on his albums. AND, he produces his own albums.
I tell you, the man is a huge talent. I dont know if he is well known in america, but i highly recomend him for upbeat, fresh, non violence/drug/cred/hore saturated hip-hop.

I personally greatly enjoy gansta rap, and I highly suggest N.W.A. they are honestly and truly the ****. I also love the Wu-tang Clan, specifically ODB.
Another interesting rap group would be Quarashi. They're so heavy that it's almost nu-metal, but good.

Ok, you totally missed the point. Aaliyah and Lisa Lopes had a dream - the dream of being at the top of their respective games, the same dream that Marshall Mathers and Curtis Jackson (Eminem/50 cent) had.
Martin Luther King had a dream too. His dream was that someday it would be possible for a black American to be able to dream of being at the top of their game. You might argue that MLK was just in the right place at the right time and it was going to happen anyway, but most folks wouldn't agree with you. Most folks would say that MLK's eloquence and philosophy were an integral part of the civil rights movement that made so many other folks' dreams possible.

I agree that they may have dreamed about being at the top of their genres. But the same would be true for any singer/performer. I just hate the way he attempts to gain credibility by using the names of two people who are black and recently deceased. Its not profound, Its just tasteless.
And I dont mean to diminsh the importance of MLK, on the contrary I think this song is too ridiculous to be referring to him.

Tell that to Kid Rock.
It's great to have your music idols, but don't make whole song about them ("American Badass") (You could put your idols in a "thank you" col. in your album booklet). Also, you could also mention Metallica for using the "Sad but Ture" riff in your song.

Thank you God for getting me out of listening to that **** and hanging out with people who do.
I think all mainstream rap just sucks....has anyone else heard that 50 cent song where he just says something stupid like "I wanna take off your clothes" (or something like that) and then he says "just a lil' bit". Now I shut off the TV before it got any furthur but I'm pretty sure that was the whole song. Talent my ass.... I don't care if he gets shot 9 more times....he'll never be a good rapper..
Rapping does not bother me at all... it's this "gangsta rap" bull**** "music" that I hate.
Now if we're just talking about music with rapping in it...I can list off plenty of bands I like with rapping
Rage
311
RHCP (earlier stuff)
Incubus (earlier stuff)
Limp Bizkit (I like a couple of songs)
Faith No More
ICP
Bloodhound Gang
Powerman 5000
Linkin Park (their 1st album and remix one were pretty good....I love that version of Crawling on Reanimation with Aaron Lewis singing the harmony on the chorus)
there's some artists I like with rapping

Way to make yourselves sound intelligent. Not only do you generalize about HATING music, you hate people based on said generalization.
I fail to see how a musician can slam other people's art, let alone tracks they haven't heard. And with no more thought out way than just giving a 'ditto' to the previous mindless poster. Last time I checked, none of you have released platinum albums or sold out arenas.
As for hating people you don't even know, you're a fool. I guess you hate me because I listen to a wider range of music than you do? Because I happen to like the catchy beats and smooth R&B grooves? BULL****. That has to be the most close-minded thing I've heard in years.

Even if I knew what the hell a, and I quote: "'most regretable downloads' from the hi-fi" was, I wouldn't look, because frankly, all that means is that you don't like a bunch of random rap songs. I don't care what music you delete.

jimbo, I never said I hated anybody or that I hated you. airfall and all the other people you quoted didn't either. I don't know about the others but i'm not close minded at all. I've listened to a whole lot of newer mainstream rap and, i've come to the conclusion it sucks. And I don't hate everyone that likes the stuff. What i've noticed is that most people I know that like it are pretty close minded and they think rock music is a bunch of screaming. And i'm not saying that all rap fans are like that because I don't want to stereotype anybody, it's just something i've noticed. And about what airfall said, he isn't judging rap fans he knows because of their musical taste, it's just that maybe those people he hates are jerks or something, and they coincidentally listen to rap.

oh wait, i almost forgot. if you don't care to look at the 10 albums (yes albums, not random rap songs) that i've deleted (actually those probably weren't the most regretable, just the most memorable... i've had probalby 50 mainstream rap albums on and off my computer in the last 18 months, and i'm NOT closed minded, so i never TRIED to like or dislike them), then you don't care enough to comment. it really is sad that you have so far misread everything i've said or been confrontational about it. if you can't understand that i have reasons for not liking mainstream rap, then i'm going to have to put you in that category of people i don't like that listen to it.

i'm sure there are a lot of really nice, wonderful people out there who like to hear guys massacring the english language, i just don't know them. and i don't know anyone who likes mainstream rap who is also open to indie, jazz, blues, classical, rock, classic rock, underground rap (Rjd2!!), electronica, world beat type stuff, ragtime, or anything else i listen to. so which do you prefer? someone who has listened to just about everything they can get their hands on and found that they don't like a couple genres, or someone who listens to ONE THING and pretends to be a gangster despite the better part of a college education?

I listen to all of the above, as well as most kinds of rock, orchestral, trip-hop, folk, pop etc.
Some people who do like mainstream rap listen to other genres. Yes, ill agree that 50 cent and Ja Rule and most commercial rap artists blow chunks, but just like any genre, there are always diamonds in with the ****.
Although i dont like it when people try to be "thugs" with the better part of a university degree, is it any worse than:
Indie kids who jump ship as soon as something become even somewhat unfashionabley mainstream?
Rich emo kids who cry about their ex shattered their horrible lives?
Hardcore metal acts obsessed with death and demons and all that crap that was cool when you were 17?
Every genre has crap. Dont cast aside an entire genre because of some wankers who give it a bad rep.
When im out in a club, as cliched as that sounds, id rather listen to some mainstream rap that gets everyone moving, then a GSYBE! song that will make everyone sit and contemplate. Maybe im shallow and have to much of a pop sensibility, but it seems that too many people are afraid to like the mainstream as well as the underground, for fear of being un-cool and un-hip.

Sorry, but I never said a damn thing about hating anything. I said that I do not like the mainstream rap currently being played and I think it sucks. I listen to a pretty wide range of music as well. I fail to see how a musician can slam other people for not liking a certain style of music. I also think country sucks. But at least those people are actual MUSICIANS. They write their own lyrics AND music. I also never said anything about hating people who listen to mainstream rap. Those people are just fine with me. I may not want to hang out with them and listen to music but I don't hate them for listening to it. Hell, if I hated everyone who listens to rap, there wouldn't be hardly any chicks left for me in my school. And did I even say anything about R&B? Maybe not mainstream mainstream, but they were pretty widely known. You are right about gorillaz though. They just have a rapish delivey in a lot of their songs, so i lumped them in. We'll substitute Nas and Beck then, for RHCP and Incubus.

I understand you man and agree with all that stuff especially the emo part. They piss me off too... But that would be kind of retarded to go into a club to mosh...that's just my opinion though..some people might love to do that
But GENERALLY I tend to find that most African-Americans and rap fans are pretty single-minded about their music and don't give anything else a chance. I have no problem with the people though unless they try to act like gangsters or whatever. I listened to rap a bunch whenever I had first heard it much because it was something new for me. But I pretty quickly decided that it wasn't really my thing. You're right about Outkast though. Those guys kick...it also helps that they write their own music and lots of it's actually good. But the only rap I dislike is like what you mentioned in the 50 Cent-type rappers.
