View Full Version : Anyone here play hip-hop?
I play a little bit of everything, but right now I'm playing in a hip-hop band. I've never heard anyone else who plays hip-hop on this board, am I the only one?
I play with a hip-hop band called 10th planet sometimes- they don't book too many gigs. It's inevitably a lot of playing the same parts- and listening to the MC's for cues.

I didn't know hip hop people ever had guitar players.
Sure- the roots just added a guitar player for their album The Tipping Point, and the black eyed peas have always had one.
Granted for the most part the guitar parts are repetitive, if not neccesarily simple.
BTW, I consider RATM to be a hip-hop band with a guitar player, too bad more "real" hip-hop bands don't use their influence as much.
I often use a combination of hip-hop, trip-hop and breakbeat beats for my shoegaze and ambient influenced music. Its a nice contrast to the smooth melodic textures I write.
I use a Korg Electribe ER1Mk11 Rhythm Synthesizer for my electronic drum beats.
I'd like to take some drum lessons so that I can play some very garagey hip hop beats like Magic Arrows.

Hip-hop can be repetative, but it forces you to be TIGHT. No room for f***ing up. I guess it's not to different than most funk music depending on what style of hip-hop you play. I was just curious if anyone here had any experience.

The closest that I got was playing a Metallica riff while one friend "freestyled" on top of it.
No, we're not a Kid Rock cover band:mad:

well I think you can look at them either way. I guess to be honest they are a rock band borrowing from hip-hop- but they borrow a lot, and a lot of the good stuff too. Since then a few hip-hop bands have done stuff with live drums and a bit of a rock feel ( i'm thinking of NERD here) but I haven't heard a lot of it.
