Ok, I'm not usually one to buy a guitar without ever playing it, but when I saw this I completely fell in love. What do you guys think? I can't wait to hear how those humbuckers sound. I love the color of it too :D

Great deal, man. My Jag's a U.S. model that I paid twice that amount for. And it's still worth it. Tell us how the humbuckers sound when you get it - mine's got single coils.

That's a really nice looking guitar, although humbuckers and a tune-o-matic bridge on a Jaguar just seems..wrong..to me. The next guitar I'm getting is definitely a Jaguar.

Here is a link to some pics of my L6. I was too lazy to make a webpage for it so you'll just see an index of the images. It has grover tuners and I replaced the bridge humbucker with a Duncan Distortion. I still have the original humbucker and will include that when it's sold. It also has the original hardshell case which is impossible to find now for these models.

Congratulations. That looks like a very solid guitar. Post sound clips when you get it!

By the way, I'm surprised no one has even mentioned Kurt Cobain yet...

why mention kurt?

Wir Click Wir, i don't know if you meant that positively or negatively, but i'm sick of people thinking certain modifications in a guitar (or anything) are "wrong". Yea, Kurt and Sonic Youth put humbuckers in the jaguars and mustangs....so what? it sounds friggin amazing and they were obviously happy about the results.

Part of being a musician and the main reason for this message board and site is about customizing your tools to get your sound you can create the art you want. Theres no "right" or "wrong". Everyone has a unique goal in mind for sound and the means and right to persue it.

Alright. It's late....i rambled. Continue aweing at the new jaguar...

Saweet!! If I played h/b's, these and SG's would be my guitars.
But I gotta agree with Skip Tracer about h/b's and the tune o matic(I know I'm a picky f#!@er).

I didn't mean it negatively, it's just that I'm also a member of the Nirvana Club message board (which I never visit anymore), and everyone there is eager to scream, "Kurt wannabe!" whenever someone decides to put a humbucker in their Mustang or Jaguar. Considering that that Jaguar special model was designed after Kurt Cobain's '65 Jag, I'm just surprised no one brought it up, that's all.

Mustangs and Jags were designed to be surf guitars, but I have nothing against cutting them up and modifying them to suit your needs. However, ruining vintage models is just sacriledge.

maybe throw a fender wide range humbucker [i'm in love with those things] in the neck position. ala lee ranaldo's jazzblasters. that looks like a good score but as posted before.. a bit wrong... BUT you could easily modify that for a bigsby tremolo!! dude. thats such a good idea...man....

Yeah it's defintly a Kurt Cobain guitar, but it just think that, the jag he had, was nicer. This looks a bit to plastic..

All I have to say is f**k Kurt Cobain. I could care less what type of guitar he played. Nirvana was way overrated. Everyone looks at them as the kings of grunge/alternative rock. There were plenty of bands out there doing what they did before they came along. Nirvana was just lucky enough to get signed by a big label and get promoted.

Nirvana was an ok band, but damn they really weren't that good. I want a jag because I've always thought they looked cool and I've always owned Gibson guitars. I just wanted something a little different to play.

I agree that I would never wreck a vintage jag or mustang. Maybe in the future I'll even purchase a vintage model. I wonder why Fender doesn't sell these modified Jags in the U.S.? Mine is being shipped directly from Japan.

Kid BS,

Although i'm a huge nirvana fan, i'm glad you bought this guitar for the guitar and not some empty hero worship. Enjoy it.

...and although i believe in customization, I too, would think twice before altering any vintage equipment.

My model isn't one of the L6s with all of the selector switches. Mine is the Deluxe model that has a normal pickup selector.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when it comes to Nirvana and The Beatles, you can say that you dislike them, but calling either of them overrated is just stamping "ignorant" on your forehead.

I'm going to make a car analogy for this one..

Jaguars are like the Volkswagons of fender, kind of odd, but beautiful and unique
Strats are kinda like Fords, tuff, reliable, and classic, with a signature feel
and teles are kind of like volvos, classy and exquisiate, economical, and versatile

wow! and that for $650

there are quite a lot of japanese jaguar specials on ebay, too bad they usually don't want to ship to the netherland (and if they would i still wouldn't be able to afford it :P). Those jap jaguar specials are what a jaguar should be like imo, humbuckers and a tune-o-matic bridge :)

perfect, congrats man

Come on now. Nirvana is not the Beatles and should not even be compared to them. I'm sorry, but Nirvana was overrated. I know plenty of bands that were in the same genre at the time that deserved as much if not more attention than they got.

Like I said, Nirvana was ok. I do like their music, but I do not consider them to be the rock gods that so many others do. They were not the inventors nor the pioneers of anything. They were a good band that just happened to be one of the first "alternative" bands to make it to the mainstream.

To be honest I'm not sure. I think it's maple from the looks and feel of it. I purchased this off of eBay several years ago. I had it professionally set up, the input jack replaced, all of the pots cleaned and I installed a new Duncan Distortion humbucker. The body of this guitar is thin and light like an SG. It feels like a feather compared to my Les Paul.

I respect your opinion, but there's no denying the impact that Nirvana made on not only the music industry, but music in general. I don't think they were "just another" alternative rock band, either...the songs were great, and they really defined that time in history. In that sense, they're comparable to the Beatles.

Kid_BS
07.10.03, 9:42 AM
That's cool. I can respect your opinion too. Just don't call me ignorant next time ;). I've been in the alternative/punk music scene for a lot of years (I'm 30) and have seen and played shows with a lot of great bands.

I remember when Nirvana hit the popular scene and how annoyed I was that people thought they were some kind of new music. They weren't. Myself and a lot of other people were playing the same kind of sh!t. What Nirvana did was break some musical barriers and make alternative music more mainstream. This opened the doors for bands like Green Day (which were around before Nirvana) to be introduced to pop culture. I won't deny that they deserve their place in musical history. However I still think that there were many more alternative bands around before and during their time period that deserved just as much if not more attention as Nirvana. Nirvana just happened to get discovered by the right people and received the right type of backing to hit it big.

I just get sick of hearing people use Nirvana as some kind of comparison chart for what is good or cool. They were a good band. They were not gods.

Kid BS,

I love nirvana (In Utero is my all time favorite album), but i understand what you're saying completely. The sound the nirvana was making, although had some unique features, in more general terms was around for a while. They don't deserve the credit for "creating" any genre. But i think those unique features, like the lyircal content, some of the intensity (tension and release) and the special attention they gave to pop-like hooks made them head and shoulders above a sea of others.

I really do understand what your saying. A lot of people hail Nirvana...but for the wrong reasons.

That Gibson L6 looks like an SG that tried, but never made it. I'd like it better, I think, if it had an upper cutaway. Not balanced enough, visually.

Rock A My Soul
07.12.03, 12:20 AM
i know it's been said before but nirvana was just able to combine the pixies (who actually were pretty commercially accessable, but didn't have a frontman who kids could identify with as easily as kurt) and add a little bit of pop and a little bit of punk. this doesn't make them geniuses, it just makes them a really good band. i think that if kurt hadn't died, they wouldn't be as mythological as they are today. they are one of my favorite bands but i do think they're a little overhyped. analogies can be drawn between them and the beatles (who, until they started experimenting, were just able to add pop and friendly faces to rock) but in the overall span of time that rock has been around, they probably wouldn't make the top twenty most important artists in rock.

You know, despite Nirvana being the reason I picked up a guitar like oh-so-many other Kurt wannabes, I would have to agree with you. I can barely listen to anything but a few tracks from 'MTV Unplugged' these days, I hate the guitar sounds and I generally dislike the songs.

Maybe this explains the reason I stayed away from Jaguars for so long. Then I realised I'm now a completely different player from when I just played Nirvana riffs, so it's more than okay. :D

I really can't see that happening. For instance, despite my publicly known vendetta against Blink 182 and Green Day, listening to some of their old stuff, I can sort of enjoy it, but I would never admit it. ;) And yes, their guitar tone was pretty horrible, but that's the last thing I think about listening to their music.

Whoah there... I don't recall mentioning either of those bands, only Nirvana. I still love Green Day (they were the second band after Nirvana that got me into rock) and their guitar/bass tones. I can tolerate a couple of Blink songs, every so often.

But Nirvana... I don't know, I remember watching Live Sold Out Tonight a few days ago and thinking 'what did i ever see in this?' despite Kurt and co. being the reason I wanted to start playing. I don't deny that they are a great band, I just don't think it any more.:o
