I could argue the "trueness" of the Offspring and MXPX.

I like X Ray Spex, The Buzz****s, Operation: Cliff Clavin, and the Undertones quite a bit. But I like hardcore (Minutemen, Minor Threat) and "emo" (Rites of Spring, Hoover) whatnot better than punk.

"Punk" is probably the most disputed genre in music, second only perhaps to "emo".

Is Blink 182 punk, or is Crass punk? Is punk something that happened 25 years ago, or are bands still making music that can be considered "punk"? Its all very confusing.

Yes, because pretty fly for a white guy was an awesome punk song along with all of their songs on MTV, dont get me wrong that since theyre on MTV they suck, but in the whole "real" punk discussion i think that has something to do with it

and MXPX on the whole sucking thing plus being in pepsi commercials or something

Yeah, the "punkness" of the Offspring and MXPX is questionable at best...however, I'd like to add that there are some "modern" punk bands that (I think) really embody the spirit of punk rock and are actually doing something important with the genre, or rather, DID something since they are unfortunately broken up. These bands being At The Drive-In and The Refused...they are, to me, the ONLY punk bands of my generation...some others run a close second, but they were at the top of the heap, and will hopefully be remembered for decades to come, as their forefathers (Minor Threat, The Stooges) have been.

i've always thought bad religion was one of the best punk bands, as well as the dead kennedys. They actually carry a message in their songs, instead of being organised by crafty businessmen and singing about the glory of anarchy and the likes.

If you stretch it that far you're really dabbling into the happy niche of post-hardcore ( that was so neatly dubbed screamo), but these bands represent very few of the ideals that punk is.

not that I don't like these bands, I love them! (check out Sunny Day Real Estate!!)

I'm surprised no one has said the Sex Pistols. When Jonny Rotten was in the bad they were what punk was all about. Really rocking songs about the youth going against the establishment. Though once Rotten was out it was just Malcom Mclaren whoring the band around for cash.

Oh geez, where do I begin . . .

If you ask any punk band what's punk, they'll all give you a different answer. I like both hardcore punk and pop-punk--and they are so different in style!

Many bands listed here I would agree with: Ramones, Clash, NOFX, Nirvana, Bad Brains, Misfits, etc. I'm a little suprised that no one has said Screeching Weasel, Pennywise, Operation Ivy, or any other band that's floated between Epitaph, Fat Wreck Chords, LookOut!, Panic Button, Nitro, Fearless, or any of the other "major" punk labels.

However, to completely see BLACK FLAG ignored is like a steak in the heart!

oi oi oi and teleman are about the only guys in here that have any clue what so ever to what there talking about......ill let some of you people who dont know what "punk" is,is......when were talking real punk i/we mean bands that started the word punk...like the sex pistols, ramones, exploited, casualties, dayglo abortions(canadian:D ).....not the "punk"of today wich is media promoted...when it was all real it was promoted by music and meanings (wich was mostly politics)...

basically my message of today is "turn off your televisions and radio stations that play the music of today and go down to your local record/vinyl store and buy a record player(if you dont already have one) and some recomended albums....they can be punk or just rock and roll but i sugest you get somethign classic so you can experience what music should be!"

I've seen alot of good bands mentioned here, alot of not so good ones as well.

Sk8punck, I got your hidden message. My one friend Dan would agree with you wholeheartedly on that one.

Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Ramones all great bands that I think did aot for the punk rock community. Even though the first three are generally considered hardcore bands, that's what I'm into so hey whatever. Their ethics made them punk bands I think.

Sex Pistols never did anything for me, but my band did do a special press of our record with Sex Pistols rip off cover art. If you wanna check it out go here - http://www.deadby23.com/discography/fb.html
It's the second record down. And just so people have some idea as to what it means, Horror Show was like our brother band at the time. It's a shame they arne't around anymore.

As for NOFX, they were one of the first bands I started listening to when I got into punk rock, so I definatly can't hate on them at all. I'll still throw their albums in every once and awhile just for kicks, and I still enjoy them.

absolutely the Clash. They became new wave, along with the other good bands of that era. I almost believe that any band that didn't 'progress' was somewhat inferior.
But the clash progressed. They worked with Samples, reggae, rock-a-billy, synths and ethnic music. That is punk, mate.

The whole idea behind punk is doing what ever you want without regard to the rules.. The fact that the clash defied the 'rules' of punk rock only makes them more punk.

This ethos is why punk is stupid, though. How punk is that?

idealflaw

i'm sure that Ice age coming would agree with me.

Seriously though, the clash can be enjoyed even if you're not into 'punk'. YOu can be an adult and still listen to them and not feel silly..

Recently xm radio had a program that was all early punk pioneers... THey covered some stuff I hadn't heard for YEARS, it was great. The clash had amazing production so it stood out dramatically against sex pistols/ramones type lo-fi. It made some of the punk seem dated.

Also, that song jetboy/jetgirl has some odd lyrics, does it not?

johnny thunders, nydolls, and the ramones ARE punk. no matter who you argue with, nobody would ever dare to say they arent. i cant tell you people who said rancid, mxpx and any new are punk how wrong you are. they are merely imitators and have no real impact on punk. i would never call myself punk, but i still have to laugh every time i see a kid with an avril tshirt and a rancid patch on their school bag ranting about how i cant listen to the ramones because i shop at the mall and shower.

I really don't like the clash, there first 2 albums are alright, after that I can't stand them....and this is a list of punk trying to cover what I see missing from the 3+ pages of post (Yes guys, I love Minor threat, The Bad Brains, Meatmen, Black Flag and all the classics)

the Buzz****s(may all time favourites) (were mentined once earlier but I <3 them)
Wire
Husker Du
Wipers
Flipper
MC5(ProtoPunk)
rocket for the tomb (NOT ROCKET FOR THE CRYPT)
Pere Ubu
the Electric Eels
decendants (they probably started so cal in all honesty)
The Germs
Circle Jerks
Blondie
Television
The Stranglers
The Modern Lovers
Johnny thunders
New York Dolls
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Suicide
Mission of Burma
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Joy Division
The Cure (last three started as punk bands)
The Jam
X
The Adverts
Scratch Acid
Big Black
The Soft Boys
the Birthday Party
Elvis Costello
The Damned
The Zeros (Mexican romones, ****ing amazing)
The Dictators (band that the romones got everything from, they even admit it)
The Pagans (can you tell from the list I love Cleveland punk)
The Velvet Underground
Dead Boys
Blue Cheer
Countless '60's garage band

This list was created with the aid of my collection of vinyl, looking for only albums I would class as "punk" or "proto punk". a couple could also be called "post punk".

You can be an adult and listen to a lot of 'punk" Hell, most classic punk holds up better as a adult then it does as a kid (at least the stuff I listen to does......)

I find the clash do not have the wide spread appeal you say they do, and that most people new to old school punk latch onto "the Buzz****s" and "The Jam" easiest, which there rather open beatles influence.

And for interesting production and writing, i think the New york scene outdid they.

i cant belive i forgot flipper and scratch acid!!!

but how can you people not mention exploited and casualties...and the sex pistols were a main band to get british and other punk rock awareness!.....i prefer "punk rock" to be good music because its something mommy and daddy dont like at all!!...if you look at avril, simple plan, new found glory, sum 41.....all the kids i knows parents have a couple of records...

and dont just look at there apearence!!!if you actually look at the music/writing style i think you would find out who is origanal and who falls under the real "punk" genre...real "punk" has to do with politics and government and anarchy....when was the last time you even heard avrli swear...or heard blink 182 cry about how they dont like the government...i say cry because thats what they do best.....original bands never cried believe me.....

i think the word "Punk" when used...meant sorta "rebal"and "anarchy"......and the child molester thing was used aswell probably to let people know they dont give a flying **** and you cant tell them what to do

on a second note for all you wannabe punks that want to really be punk....dont molest children..or blow up cars because youll just rase taxes!

i've been having the punk arguement with people for 10 years and i hate it.
as far as i can tell, punk is based more around ethics than music, i think....

I'll start by raising the finger to all those who say 'punk's dead'.
Then I'll tell you that at the moment these bands are rocking my ass:
Dillinger Four, Trial By Fire, Good Riddance, Strike Anywhere, Propagandhi, Hot Water Music and many many more.

You can't beat the local punk scences we have over in the UK though, fsking awesome. Hull's pretty damn good, and Leeds, London..

I got into punk listening to the Sex Pistols and Operation Ivy, then I just checked out as many bands as humanly possible.

Actually, most of the punks I've met don't use very many safety pins. Too expensive. And I've NEVER seen a guy **** up a leather jacket, If you can afford a leather jacket you don't ruin it.

Punk is alive, check out Plan-It-X and it's friends. How can you argue that these people aren't "punk?" Chris Clavin lives off his label, which sells all of it's CD's for $5.00. He and his TDIE bandmate Hannah ARE the label! Don't say it died in the '70's. It just went underground.

Then Green Day came along and unwittingly ****ed everything up.

Jesus... the punk rock discussion is like fighting over religion.

I would also put The Kinks & The Animals in as originators of punk rock, but best punk band ever? Pfft...um... I would say Iggy & The Stooges, but it's all debatable.

However I disagree with any band formed in the past 10 years being "The best punk band ever" No matter who they are.

and to a lesser extent:

Joy Division, the cure, Siouxie and the banshees, Elvis Costello and Velvet are ALL punk to me. I hate how punk became all power-chord and oi mohawk bull**** fashion. To me that's not punk. The Undertones were good. Their lyrics may not have had the Punk ideas but their music did.

As far as Modern Punk all I really like is early Ash. It has a sort of Pop Punk sound to it which comes from the Undertones.

Thanks man, I might come off as a shoegaze boy, but I have a punk rock streak a mile wide.........I've tried to get into the clash (I have the first 3 albums) and never have been able too.

But at least I gave them a really good shot I figure.

The star that people might not know off that list is the Wipers.....they have a bunch of free MP3's at www.mp3.com.
Nirvana covered a couple of their tracks, so that is where they gathered their fame. Grab ....****!!!!!

Ok nevermind, they took all there great songs down after mp3.com limited it to 3 songs.....

So, I suggest grabbing "Over the Edge" and "So Young" off you favourite P2P program just to sample.

there site tells about all there gear too.....pretty cool.
