Rock 'n' Roll Star - Oasis - Definetly Maybe
Break on Through - The Doors - The Doors
Yes - McAlmont & Butler - The Sound Of...
Movin' On Up - Primal Scream - Screamadelica
wow -- a toughy.
ok -- here are a few in no particular order
The Doors -- Break On Through -- from The Doors (set the tone for this band's entire career)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience -- from Are You Experienced -- Hey Joe
REM -- Radio Free Europe -- from Murmur (one song contains almost all of the characteristics of their later work)
Led Zeppelin -- Good Times, Bad Times -- from Led Zeppelin I (again features all the characteristics of their later work)
SRV -- Love Struck Baby -- from Texas Flood
Oh! Wait a minute ... lol .. I misread the post ... I was thinking first song, first album first album -- but it really doesn't make that distinction -- well i'll just stick with those anyways :D

These are just a few that come to mind....
Teenage Riot-Sonic Youth, Daydream Nation
Brown Sugar-The Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers
Blitzkrieg Bop-The Ramones, The Ramones

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart-Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Summer Babe-Pavement, Slanted and Enchanted

Folsom Prison Blues-Johnny Cash, Live at Folsom Prison
There's probably more I could come up with, but I'm tired of typing. You could probably argue whether or not any of these fall in the "best ever" category, but I think they're pretty solid choices.

Astronomy Domine(Piper at the Gates of Dawn, from Pink Floyd)
and War Pigs from Paranoid(we all know the song).

You all may not agree, or may not listen to all the same stuff I do, but for the sake of changing it up a little, I'll throw a couple tunes into the ring:
Paul Simon - Rhythm of The Saints - "The Obvious Child"
hoobastank - hoobastank - "Crawling In The Dark"
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind - "Beautiful Day"
I Mother Earth - Blue Green Orange - "Love Your Starfish"
Transatlantic - SMPTe - "All Of The Above"
Dream Theater - Awake - "6:00"
Rajaton - boundless - "Butterfly"
Bobby McFerrin - The Voice - "Blackbird"
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds - Live at Luther College - "One Sweet World"
That should do for now. Varied enough for you? Recognise all the artists? I have a wide taste in musics.

Smells like teen spirit - Nirvana
THis one is so obvious, those first 4 chords hit like an atom bomb back in 91. Brilliant opening to a brilliant album..
Also:
Here- by VAST, off of V.A.S.T... Amazing, it blends the heaviest organs, guitars and orchestras and drums and sounds like a thousand people on stage all at once. Wicked album..
Where the Streets have No Name - U2,. ONce again, totally sets off the path for the rest of the album. It's glorious, enormous and sucks you right into the cd. A classic, no doubt.
Untitled, by interpol. That song embodies that band perfectly.
Great topic. I'm glad to see fans of paul simon as well, who created the Graceland masterpiece. He should get more credit for being a musical badass. Often overlooked though.

Oh, I totally forgot a GREAT ONE!
"Never let me Down Again" off depeche modes' siminal "Music for the masses". What a wicked album opener....
Also The first song off The Tea Partys' "Edges of Twighlight" called Fire in my head. Amazing. THat mother****er can play guitar like no one else.
I wish i could work the smiths into this list, but their album-openers are always weak..

I still don't own that record. Did they credit George Orwell for that song in the liner notes?

I don't know...I can't find my case... Kinda obvious, though. I wouldn't necessarily expect them to.
*EDIT: Have checked the liner notes and have not found a reference to Orwell.

Off the top of my head, I can think of two albums with amazing first tracks.
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space. Immediately sucks you in, and you remain in a daze until "Cop Shoot Cop" finally fades out.
Hum - Downward is Heavenward - Isle of the Cheetah. The opening chords and the flood of sounds which follow set a beautiful scene, and once you are completely drawn in, the distorted guitars come in with that crushing D5 and launch you into space.

so many that have been mentioned already. Also:
Radiohead, Pakt Like sardines in a crushed tin box, amnesiac
Korn, Blind, Korn
The Moldy Peaches, Lucky number nine
AndThenTheresMe

"Tired of Sex"- Weezer, Pinkerton. The opening squall of feedback, the bassline, and then at just past a minute the guitars rip into the song and the drums bludgeon the hell out of it. That song fits the album perfectly and is just kickass in and of itself.
obviously, "Smells like teen spirit"
"Cherub Rock"- The Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream
So propulsive, and I love the gradual introduction of the instruments.
"Back in the U.S.S.R." - The Beatles, White Album (technically called The Beatles)- Love that jet engine. Plus it just rocks.
"Airbag"- Radiohead, OK Computer
The first time I heard that I was stunned. I wanted to play guitar. I still play that opening line all the time when just noodling absently- E: 0 1 8 9 7 8 5 . . .
"Rusty Cage"- Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger.
God that song is amazing. The lightening riff, the thumping bass, Chris Cornell's wails. I mean, Johnny Cash once covered this. Need I say more?

Urban Clearway - Saint Etienne, "Tiger Bay"
Trash - Suede, "Trash"
Rocks Off - The Rolling Stones, "Exile On The Main Street"
Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones, "Sticky Fingers"
Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones, "Let It Bleed"
Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones, "Beggars Banquet"
The Concept - Teenage Fanclub, "Bandwagonesque"

If they have to, then Rage Against the Machine should for their song with the lyrics, "who controls the past controls the future, who controls the present controls the past."
I just heard My Name is Jonas on the radio, that's a pretty awesome opening track.
How about "Schizophrenia" (did I spell that right?) on Sonic Youth's Sister album? that's a good one.
And whoever said "Everything Flows" by Teenage Fanclub, wasn't that the second song on that album?
