out the many "retro rock" bands that have been coming out in the past couple of years, who is your favorite? as much as I hate using a stupid phrase like "retro rock" I couldn't think of a better way to put it. my personal pick is Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, they have a lot different a sound than the other bands that they get thrown in the same category as. anyway vote as post your thoughts. this should be interesting...

For me, its a tie between BRMC and TSTOOL. I'm just not a fan of the other two..
I haven't heard Soundtrack, and I like Black Motor Cycle Club, but the White Stripes fukin rule! Fucin rule! I feel like I'm posting on one of those metal boards.
I like all four bands, though I'm most impressed by BRMC. Lyrics aren't spectacular, but they're far from bad, and the music itself is stellar.
Soundtrack's fun to listen to also (and I do like most of their lyrics). Kinda sucks if their singer's as big a freak as gururyan says - since I haven't seen 'em live I can only rate the 3 cds I've got.
And despite their omnipresence on rock radio, I have a lot of fun listening to the way the Strokes' two guitars play around with rhythm.
The White Stripes are hit or miss with me. I really like some of their stuff, and some is pretty unimpressive. The biggest turnoff, though, is that Jack White seems like a jackass. That obviously has nothing to do with the music (which is why I still own their last 2 albums), but it still lessens my overall opinion of them.

All the bands are good but they're also victims of the NME/Noel Gallagher Band of the Week Syndrome

I think Interpol should be on the list. I think they're a lot better than any of the others. I love their songs and their guitar sound is fantastic.
The Strokes songs all sound very similar to each other. BRMC is OK, they've got a cool vibe, but their song Spread Your Love sounds like a copy of the old Booker T and the MG's tune "Green Onions". The White Stripes are OK, they seem kind of more like a novelty though (OK so shoot me now!).

interpol will be the band that comes out of all this with the most 'credibility'..
i think they could be huge... just wait..

Actually I got that wrong. I was thinking of the 60's tune "Spirit In The Sky" (Norman Greenbaum, I think?), not Green Onions. Exact same chord/rhythm progression.
Hey idealflaw,
I like your avatar. When I read your post, I keep hearing Alf saying it!

I went to see PaloAlto, Soundtrack was just a bonus. Anyway, the singer of that band is a freak. I don't mean that in a good way. I really got turned off to Soundtrack after seeing them. That dude is this cult like leader or something. He came out with this hooded cape on and kept doing the "Jesus pose" like he was trying to pet all "his children" or something. The whole vibe was really strange...in a bad way. Fans of the band we were with were even turned off. In fact, I think most the people there were weirded out in bad way.
yeah their lead singer is a freak! he thinks he's a norse god or something. I think he's funny to watch though, and they are a very good band.

i can't vote. i've been somewhat disappointed by all 4 bands. i'm not sure why, but i guess since i didnt live through the era of music they're trying to recreate, i dont understand or it seems out of place or something. the white stripes were especially disappointing, simply because of the simplicity of their music. am i missing something???

If I had to pick, i'd say the white stripes... but i'm really not into this rebirth of this style...

I agree about the White Stripes. the thing is that The Strokes have very very simple music, but they can actually play their instruments pretty good. (especially Nick Valensi) but The White Stripes have very little real musical talent, other than the ability to write fairly catchy melodies. I'm not talking about having to be EVH here, I just prefer that the people I listen to know how to play their intruments. anyway that's my opinion, nobody get pissed off about it now...

They are all mercilessly hyped, which means everyone will forget about them in 2 years' time.

that is more than likely true. then again, that's what everyone said about Oasis too, and they're still around. bands can survive the hype if they mature musically, take for example Radiohead, go listen to Pablo Honey and then listen to The Bends and realize how they went from being a hyped up grunge band to one the most influencial rock bands ever.

I agree with you to an extent but Oasis didn't survive being overhyped by maturing. They survived by being pretty much as good as they were hyped to be and by having the right kind of Rock & Roll attitude so people were actually interested in them.

I think Oasis are for people who failed to grasp the greatness of The Beatles and The Stones in the first place, so we'll leave that out. Radiohead did a self-colonoscopy (disappeared up their own arses for good, seemingly) with Kid A after a splendid OK Computer, and they are still at it. How can this bleepy faux-electronic wank they peddle really attract people? Something is wrong with the world, indeed.
