I have a 002 Rack, and using the grid mode for drums using Sampletank sux! Reason is cool, but I prefer a grid style approach compared to loops or a drum machine for rock songs. It's more tedious but allows alot more room for creativity.

Anyone know of good sounding drum software with a hit-by-hit grid-like writing style that doesnt suck?

I tend to use the grid mode in Pro Tools, make a MIDI channel and then rewire to Reason's ReDrum or Dr.Rex or sometimes even the NN19 or NNXT depending on the complexity of the sample.

Havinf said that, there are some great softwares out there for drums, check out BFD...

I bought BFD recently and it's simply amazing! You can trigger the beats in from your keyboard...edit them in the MIDI grid! The sounds are as real as it gets IMOP!! Need a fast computer though...

i tend to use reason at the minute using the redrum software mainly and then importing the loops into acid and soundforge and cutting up and creating sequences from that

but most the drum stuff i would create is minimal
