View Full Version : Favorite bassist?

Just wondering. Who's your favorite bassist? Personally, I can't stand slap & pop, odd as it may be. I respect guys like Claypool and Wooten (his version of Amazing Grace was badass), but it's just not my thing. My two favorite bassists are Justin Chancellor, from the band TOOL, and Drew Roulette from the band Dredg. These guys borth add a lot to their music, instead of just emphasizing the guitar work all of the time. Justin writes some really amazing lead bass lines (Schism, 46 & 2, etc.), in addition to adding extra flavor to the music (Pu****, Third Eye, Eulogy, etc.)
If you listen to any Dredg song, you'll immediatly notice Drew's great rythmic playing. I really think that he takes Dredg from good to great.

What about you?

Geddy Lee from rush is my favorite bassist. He is not only an amazing bassist he sings too. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do it. Watch him play the hell out of his bass, sing and play keyboards with his feet all at the same time. He gets a really good sound from his bass also.

I like steve harris too.

- Jaco Pastorius - he's simply the best, no question.

- Cliff Burton - Listen to the harmonized bass solo in Orion at about 6:40...that's all you need to hear.

- Steve Harris - He's Steve Harris! I don't know what more I need to say. Crazy technique, great tone, and he wrote some of the greatest metal songs ever without a guitar present.

- Colin Greenwood - The perfect backbone to some amazing music. Very 'appropriate'.

- John Paul Jones - In my opinion, he's the best rock bass player who ever lived. Combine that with his awesome keyboard skill/arrangement skill, and he's just the total package.

Honorable mentions - Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, John Entwistle, Chris Squire, Flea, Duff McKagan

Most of the best bass players have already been spoken for in this thread ... I'll add 2:

Lemmy: Sure he's a rhythm guitar player on bass but has tone and can belt out a mean bassline too.

Billy Sheehan : If you have a chance to play with a Billy Sheehan nut ... go for it! ... he'll make you sweat.

3. tim payne-thursday. yeah all you snobs scoff at "screamo" or whatever you wanna call them, but tim brings the goods. great tone and lyrical basslines. not to mention tasteful and supportive, many times i stop listening to that band and just listen to him.

2.ed breckenridge-thrice. yeah more emo-core for you 30 yr. old doctors with prs's, or 27 year old metal dudes with les pauls and mesas to make fun of, but this dude owns tone. and in a world of fenders-thru-solidstate bass amps this guy rocks a gibson through a distorted all tube ampeg. not to mention he hangs on to all of the triplets with a defective right arm and everything. rock and roll

1.manuel carrero-glassjaw(eyewtkas only) now glassjaw isnt that great, and the second album was really homogenous and generic sounding, even ill admit that. manny only played on the first album, his sound defined tone for me. he played a distorted fender with his fingers. and some of the riffs on the first record seem like they might be a tad difficult to play with fingers. he later went to play with hardcore legends burn. and then metal band jiant. im not sure where hes at now...give this guy a listen, he really has some skills

I am a Sabbath fan and loved Geezer when I was learning, but he just get's so damn repetitive. He constantly stays within the same minor pentatonic and NEVER strays from it.

He's a solid bassist and still one of my influences, but he never really got very creative with his playing.

The bassist from lit is Kevin Baldes. He's pretty good but sometimes he does no better then the atrocities which are blink 182 (basicly just playing root notes of the guitar which is boring as hell).

He said he never took bass lessons before and that he'd only learned guitar. Sometimes though he does do some really great basslines that I'm yet to figure out.

And I also forgot to mention Jim Creegan from Barenaked Ladies. Not too many people these days still play uprights, let alone uprights and regular electrics, let alone totally own them both. At a concert in Feb. he did like a 2-3 minute solo on his upright. I almost wanted to quit playing, it was so good.

1. Dirk Lance (ex-Incubus)
- Well, I live in South Africa so the chance of me every seeing Incubus here is slim to none, but one of the guys posted that Ben Kenney doesn't pull off Dirk Lance's basslines live. Hey there Darthpony. I am actually surprised that you say that. In my opinion (and I did see them live) Ben is way superior than Dirk. Ben is a pro, a real one. Dirk was awesome and the one who wrote most of those funky basslines in the records, but Ben is a real pro who is absolutely flawless on stage, a great studio performer and an overall musician. He is also a phenomenal drummer and guitar player (he does a drum section with Jose and Brandon during "vitamin"). I think there is a video of this on www.enjoyincubus.com
In addition, I got to meet them all last month and we hung out for like two hours and that did nothing but boost my appreciation for these guys. Put it this way: I went to the concert without being a fan...now I love them.

Hey man :)

In NO way am I dissing Ben Kenney. I think he's a good bass player.

Well, like you said you've seen them live and I haven't. But I've read posts about guys who say they think Dirk was better than what Ben is. Maybe it's just a case of different perceptions? I've tried to find as much live stuff as what I can of the band over the last couple of years, and I've never observed Dirk being a bad player live. He looked and sounded as pro as could be. I haven't seen Ben Kenney play with them in a live environment, but that's besides the point. Dirk just grooves more.

Maybe it's the sound the band has chosen to go with, and that's all good, I love Incubus and I always will, but as a bass player I'm preferential to Dirk's playing. Or at least, the Incubus sound back then. I don't really care if he plays guitar or drums or the french horn for that matter - his role in the 'bus is that of a bass player. And my idea of a bass player is Dirk Lance :)

But anyways, I'm sure there's too many Dirk vs Ben discussions on the internet, so let's just stick to the topic at hand.

This is just my opinion by the way ;)

It was technically solo, but not literally. He was playing with some local cats (Seattle being local). All improv stuff. Honestly it wasn't the best stuff of his Ive heard, but it was still a great treat. :D

I havent tried his tuning system yet. But I should.

I've seen Eyvind Kang a number of times, as hes based here and a friend of a friend. And now that I think about it, G. Calvin Weston is coming to town in the next month or so. Sometimes, Seattles a great place to live. :D

I dig Otomo as turntablist most. To many other guitarists I like more. (note the mention of Haino in my sig ;) who I saw with Fu****susha a while back ... THAT was a religious experience!)

I recognize Nikki Sixx as a songwriter and nothing else. Gene too. Gene had a few cool lines here and there but I never heard anything cool from Nikki.

Only three for Geezer?! Oh man, what's happening?!
But you're probably right, he isn't/wasn't exactly incredibly varied when he plays/played with Sabbath.
And Al Jourgenson from Ministry seems pretty cool to me as well.

My favourite Nikki Sixx story is when he saw Judas Priest live in the 80's, and very famously observed, "That guy (Rob Halford) must get a lot of *****!" :D

Re: Ministry. I preferred Paul Barker myself.

I wanted to add John Deacon from Queen to this list, who really is a gravely underrated bassist.

Al didn't play bass - Paul Barker played bass with Ministry, RevCo and numerous other Al side-projects.

I've always seen Al listed as a bass player, like on the 1.000 Homo Dj's personnel list on NIB. ALso, he just did an ad in Bass player wherein he is showing off his ESP(?) bass of choice.

That's the ESP/LTD ad where it's the three of them (Al, Mike Scaccia and some other guitarist) wearing sombreros and holding their guitars upright. Yeah, Al's holding a bass in that picture and Paul Barker's nowhere in sight. That ad's making the rounds in all the guitar mags.

He was paid to pose with the bass - he has always played keyboards and guitar and nrither of those has he played much. I have seen both RevCo and Ministry and Paul Barker was playing bass both times. Paul quit Ministry a while back - that's why he's not in the ESP ad.

Hermes Pan is creditied with plaing bass in 1000 Homo DJ's (and many other side projects) - Hermes Pan is Paul. Al was often credited as Hypo Luxa.

For all I know Al may be playing bass some now that Paul has retired but in the prime or Ministry it was Paul.

Perhaps I knew not enough to make the comment. My knowledge of Ministry is essentially limited to hearing the music, but I know little about the band. I haven't seen the credits on the 1,000 Homo Dj's album, but on the Nativity in Black Black Sabbath tribute album, the credits for "Supernaut" list Al Jourgensen as "Buck Satan," and list him as playing bass and keyboards as well as singing. However it is, they're* awesome, and "Supernaut" on that album is probably the best Black Sabbath cover ever, except maybe for Soulfly's "Under the Sun."

*Refers to both 1,000 Homo DJ's and Ministry.

Also, does anyone know completely the whole deal with Trent Reznor, and who does which version of that song? I thought they originally recorded it in '91, then they did it again with Al instead of Trent in '94, or they remixed the vocals to make Trent sound like Al. Its confusing, and discussing it in this kind of painful detail is the reason why this site is called Guitargeek, I suppose.

I'm sure he was paid well to pose with that bass; Al's a self-described "promosexual". He's also done ads for Ibanez and Gibson.

Most likely, unless their current bassist doesn't want to endorse LTD.

I've seen Ministry a few times and Paul was with them each time. He used a Gibson Thunderbird; he's so tall that it looked like a regular guitar!

Billy Sheehan, hes the only bassist that acually BLOWS me away. Some people say Stu Hamm is better, but all he does it takes licks from like cartoons and stuff. Billy Sheehan is the first guy ive seen that taps on bass.

Damn, I can't believe that I read through 7 pages until I came to the first vote for either James Jamerson or Stanley Clarke.

Jamerson put the groove in Motown, and if you haven't heard of Stanley Clarke, find a copy of the album "Romantic Warrior" by Return to Forever.

Many people cite Jaco because of Weather Report, but if you really want to hear someone laying down some riffage, listen to Clarke, DiMeola, and Corea have at it in "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant." That piece just blows me away every time I hear it.

I was also somewhat surprised that one of my favorite bassists didn't get one mention in over fifty posts. Who, you might ask? Mel Schacher, bassist for one of the most underrated bands ever, Grand Funk Railroad. Take a listen to either "Footstompin' Music" or "Inside Looking Out." The dude flat rocks!

+1 to Phil Lesh.
I think Entwistle was the best rock bass player hands down, he did so much to bring the bass from backline to the fore. Also , I can't beleive no one has mentioned , Berry Oakley, or Mel Schacher. These guys were great bassists, to bad Berry is gone.
