View Full Version : Not afraid to like Frank Zappa

No one seems to mention Frank Zappa or recommend any albums. Granted the guy has quite a catalog with 60+ titles, but he's really worth checking out. Once I got past the silliness, I realized what an amazing musician he was as well as the revolving group of players he had. I'm not a huge fan of guitar solos either, but most of his stuff seems to captivate me where others have failed.
If you want something to start off with, I'd recommend "Joe's Garage". Probably one of his best, but there are so many to choose from.

Man, I love Zappa! I really like "Joe's Garage" too, but I must say, it was quite awkward when I was in the car with my mom and the "Gimme some BLOW-JOBS" part came on...

Ya thats something I just realized, for a guitar site, not too much mention of Zappa here (only 23 threads) weird .

LOL. That's the beauty of the album. It's so in your face and directly aimed at the "apple pie values" of the US.

i had a hippy friend, who was quite 'instrumental' [excuse the pun] in getting me to play guitar, who listend to a TON of zappa. he even started a jam band with his friends to just sit around, smoke pot, and play zappa tunes all day.
my mom used to sing 'watch out where the huskies go, dont you eat that yellow snow' when i was a child up in indiana. so i never ate the snow in the backyard where my dog romped.

I love frank zappa and the mothers of invention. I think they were a really cool band. My father has lot's of his albums and I grew up listening those psychadelic musics. But i was never influenced by him in my playing style (if i have any) or in my songs. I just get a nostalgic feeling when I ear zappa :) Nobody makes music like he used too, and that's kinda sad.

I also dig Zappa, from what I've heard.
I really should go buy some of his albums, because it would do me good to learn some of those badass guitar parts.
Seems to me Les Claypool is approaching Zappa's weird level, and his musicianship is generally pretty tight, but nowhere near the Mothers of Invention.
Zappa wrote Psychedelic Funk Symphonies... totally cool :)

I agree. I haven't heard much of his stuff past Primus though. Ler Lalonde put together a compilation of his favorite Zappa songs recently. I'd be interested in hearing that one.
