Hey, figured I'd be the first to post since I'm the one that wanted this thread... hopefully people actualy see it.

Anyways, real sloppy I made 2 quick clips to show you the sonic differences between a sonic maximizer in your FX loop and when its turned off. Big sound difference:

it goes from Maximizer off, to on..to off again. You'll tell.

Clip 1 (http://www.shelleygrund.com/recording/mp3s/sm1.mp3)

Clip 2 (http://www.shelleygrund.com/recording/mp3s/sm2.mp3)

Enjoy

Dude, that sounds great. At first it just sounded like an EQ going on and off but the second time I listened I could here more.

Nice playing too!:)

Add a BBE to the GAS list. :D

<-- Loves his 482i.

My bass player tried it a couple months back, didn't really like it that much. He tried it again the other day - blew him away. He's buying one now :).

I picked up the pedal version, the Sonic Stomp. It's a great addition to just about any rig. I was totally happy with my setup before I got it and didn't think things could sound any better but it really gives everything extra chunk and sparkle. I keep it engaged all the time, I'll never go back to playing without it.

BTW Majin, I love your rig man. Where'd you pick up the Orville and the JMP at such good prices? Also, are you using the A/B switcher to run your bass combo as part of your guitar rig?

Yeah, lots of people mistake the Maximizer's effect as EQ. But if you listen hard, all the frequencies are the same, its just more of a "pillow away from teh amp" type of effect.

But you know, personally, I don't even like the maximizer in my setup, makes things slightly digital and processed sounding. I have it for when I need to play some heavy heavy power chords. otherwise, it sits to the side as my Bass Direct In Box!

First time you listen, just sounds like a bass increase, but you can actually tell it gives a rounded increase. I can only just hear that, but my ears arent properly trained yet :)

Is the pedal the same or is it lacking than the rack jobs?

Is it not possible to equally boost all frequencies to a certain degree to achieve the same result?

Pardon my ignorance, but it kinda just seems as they all frequencies are boosted by 3dB or so.

Im probably totally wrong, so correct me if i am. Im not great when it comes to splitting different frequencies!!

According to the BBE website, the Sonic Stomp pedal has identical circuitry to the 482i rack unit, the only difference being the rack units have dual-mono operation, so they are actually two maximizers in one rack unit. They are simple units in regards to their controls, with only 2 knobs, "Lo Contour" and "Process", which control the amount of low-end and overall intensity of the effect respectively. BTW, where in Pennsylvania are you from dude?

On the surface it sounds alot like what an EQ is capable of but it's actually quite a bit different. The BBE units compensate for phase and amplitude distortions that are caused when the sound signal is fed through speakers. I was a little skeptical about it at first myself but once you get used to the differences it makes in your sound you realize that an EQ wouldn't be able to do the same thing. It's good for any sound source, not just guitar. I'm sure it would liven up a bass rig, and it's used on vocals, in P.A.'s, surround sound systems, car audio, all kinds of stuff. There's even a Sonic Maximizer plug-in for computers available. This page explains more about how it works than I ever could:

It's got to be used subtly, you don't want to max out the knobs but I think it's a great unit. If one of the amp makers was smart, they'd get a partnership going with BBE and have them built into their amps.

By the way, if you happen to pick up the pedal version I'd advise against powering it with batteries. It goes through them fairly quickly and your sound goes downhill in a hurry when your battery runs down. I actually thought the unit was a piece of crap at first because I had a weak battery in it. It was a brand new Duracell fresh out of the box but it was still a dud and it really messed up the sound.
