View Full Version : recording using amp modeling with pedals

I've been thinking of getting the Korg Ampworks (amp modeler) and recording some stuff with it on my 4 track or on the computer.

I wonder however if I use this modeler (its like a POD for those who are unfamilar) where do you guys normally place it in the chain if you are using it with guitar pedals. Before the time/modulation type pedals (if using distortion on the modeler) or right at the end of the chain to simulate the entire signal going into an amp with speakers.

Please note: I can't "just experiment" since I don't have one yet. The answers could influence me to buy one of these units or not. Basically, I already have all the effects I need in pedal form. So help me out guys... why do I need an amp modeler to record? And if I do, where should I use it?

(I hate the sound of the delays, wahs and such on the amp modelers and would much prefer to use my own pedals)

thanks! :)

If you have a speaker sim on then I wouldn't put any effects after the modeller. Plus the output is most likely going to be at line level, not instrument level, so there may be some impedance issues. I know that the V-amp pro has an fx-loop...actually 2. One goes after the onboard effects and one before. I'm not sure if the ampworks has that.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a speaker sim.. The ampworks would take care of that. If I understand correctly, I need the output to the computer to be at a line level as opposed to an instrument level?? I have connected my guitar directly to the computer before without a problem. Was this wrong?

Without knowing your soundcard, setup etc.:

Its not wrong like "its gonna blow something up" wrong but it should make the recorded guitar sound thin and crappy. That's what a DI box is for; to boost instrument level signals to line level. Although I've never used any of the Pods, etc. so I don't know what levels the ins and outs are set for.

You can put effects after amp sims. But it will sound like a post production "Studio" effect rather than an effect into an amp, its not that different.

Thanks for the help guys.. I was a little confused between buying the Korg Ampworks or the Zoom G2. In the end the Korg seemed more intuitive, with a better distortion.

So I bought the Ampworks new from musiciansfriend for $39! :)
