what does audio interface do?

I want to start recording,and my question is do you have to have an audio interface to have a decent recording i have an pxr4 4 track recorder, can i use it for that purpose

You will definitely need a recording interface to have a decent recording.

The PX4 is a unit designed more for songwriters and guitarists who wanna make fast demos. It's not really suited for making any sort of full-fledged recording. Not to mention there are no microphone inputs or preamps in the thing so you can't really record anything with a mic and have it sound decent.
