"Doorman's Placebo" too... also one of my favs. "starslight" "lopsided" "ticklish." All of them are my fav. AH! I can't get enough of ATDI. But definitely "initiation" and "doorman's placebo".

They have some really abrasive melodies and really awesome guitar (both rhythm and lead). The lyrics are stellar and are void of any corny mainstream cliches.

They are unique.

I can't get into them. I have tried my best too see what the big deal is, same with mars volta. I find them both realy....boring.

I have not heard sparta yet, perhaps I will today.

I think I love the sparta cd so much right now is because I just broke up with someone very important to me, and it was good therapy. I hate the "emo" tag but sparta has a lot of that kind of stuff going on, IMO. it gave me another excuse to be sad. Lots of powerful stuff on the cd though.

Sparta is amazing, you also owe it to yourself to check out The Mars Volta. I like Sparta better but whenever I'm the mood to listen to some tripped out music The Mars Volta is perfect. At The Drive-In was great, it's also cool that they broke up into 2 cool bands.

Incidentally, I have partied with these doods when they were just a local band in El Paso. They went to my rival high school! Its soo nice to pop these records in and hear Cedrics voice screaming and burning, as compared to his beautiful rock opera voice hes got going on right now....

To answer a question on what they sound like....

They are latin infuzed prog rock. imo. All the beats are latin for sure. considering their mariachi background. In thier first few albums you can switch out the prog with punk.

the real joy from these guys is seeing them live. They are amazing. I saw them play with Jimmy Eat World in El Paso in 1997, and i never knew human beings could move on stage like that and keep complex mind blowing rhythems going like that. Even in thier current configurations....Go see them. Go now.

Man im glad someone started a thread on these guys again. ATDI are still worlds ahead of anything that's coming out now in music. I have heard close to everything they ever recorded, that includes live videos and other **** like interviews. I wish i could have seen them live, ill never have the chance now but Im seeing sparta at lollapalooza this summer. Their new record rocks too. As for my favorites...

No cliches?

Anyone remember that show...something farm? I remember this rock show, it might have even been on fox? and at the drive in played one armed scissor. They were bouncing about, barely hitting the tones on the album, and the singer was too busy jumping off **** and dancing about to sing. I hope if I saw them live that they would actually put on a show. Don't get me wrong though, I do like them and their bands offspring....I have no problem with the performer feeling the music and needing to express it physically, by jumping about and wailing a guitar over your head, but when you arent even hitting the tones its time you stop and actually play the music. thats when I see you stepping into pose/cliche mode.

Don't bother, sparta is the worst of the 3. If you didn't like at the drive-in and the mars volta then i doubt you will like sparta.

I adored Relationship of Command the other albums are pretty ok but not amazing. The Mars Volta is alright if i'm in the right mood. There is somthing kind of silly about The Mars Volta that doesn't let me keep a strait face, sort of like Muse.
Sparta is basically crap. I guess "air" is an ok song.

I saw them live and although I'm a huge fan, I think they screwed up. Atleast Cedric and Omar did. Omar was a little off time with his noises a lot. And Cedric is just too busy doing handstands and throwing around the mic to realize he's screwing up his lyrics.

Double post on a resurected thread. 30 lashes.:p

I would suggest getting some sort of orangish/marshallish amp, cranking it, putting a jb in the bridge of your guitar, and playing like a 13 year old on speed, who also suffers from ADHD.

I disagree that Jim Ward is the backbone of ATDI. Paul was the backbone, half the time Jim was trying to find something to do over at his little keyboard station. I will admit, Jim was a great rhythm guitarist, except for when they played on Conan. If you listen to Jim, he gets very off, and Omar is much more with Tony and Paul, despite his crazy movements. Now, ATDI definitely sacrificed playing for movement sometimes, especially Cedric, sometimes to the point where it got annoying. Cedric was doing the same thing when De-Loused came out for Volta, but now his live performances are flawless and no one can **** talk his singing. However, back to my main point, Jim Ward hardly ever moved, and his posture was terrible. He looks great playing with Sparta, which is why I don't realize why he looks like a hunched-over geek when he's playing with ATDI. it never bothered me until I saw them on Conan and Jim Ward sucked balls. Don't get me wrong though, Jim is a great player and Sparta is awesome, but I just don't think he was the backbone. He was a great backing vocalist though, always sounding exactly like the album when he did it live. Does anyone know which show was their last? I heard it was Conan, when Omar threw his guitar and Cedric and Omar ran off stage before the song was over.

Jim certainly is the 'backbone' of Sparta. I had the fortune of sharing a beer with him after a show (super nice guy - and buddies with Josh Homme...which I rambled on about like a drunken idiot). :) I've heard TMV is a bit too much live (meaning alot of "white noise").

That said, ATDI was the shiznit.

First off, (IMO)"Relationship of Command" is Flawless. Its the "OK Computer" of (Dare I say) Post/punk/hardcore. Maybe a tie for that with Fugazi's "The Argument". Anyway, what I'm getting at is that it took the sound to a whole new level that no one, not even the band, could top.

That being said, The "Vaya" EP is my favorite ATDI record. Its when they first started to experiment (especially with electronics) and push boundaries.

According to most interviews, Jim was far from the backbone of the band. He was actually kicked out at one point before Omar moved from bass to lead guitar. (I don't know if anyone pointed this out already)

yup, on their first record, acrobatic tenement, omar was on bass and they had a different drummer, another guitarist, jim ward, and cedric i believe. for a while jim left, and i think that's when omar switched to guitar.
