View Full Version : what do you really need for recording?
So, I tried to search but I didn't find anything, maybe I searched for the wrong things... Oh well.
I'll be investing in some recordinggear later next year, and I wonder, what do you REALLY need?
What I'm thinking of buying is:
Line 6 Toneport (probably the bigger version)
Some sort of music mixing program...
So, it won't be any advanced recordings, but I still want it to sound good. I'll probably use it for my band, making demos and stuff like that...
So, my question is, what more do I need? Do I need a mixer and stuff like that? I want to record drums, song, guitar, bass and ad somethings, like piano and stuff like that...
What I'm thinking more of buying is:
a mixer
a midi-keyboard
two mics (one for song and stuff, one for guitar and stuff, no mics for drums...).
Anybody got any suggestions? :)
Oh, and don't be mad about my bad english... ;)
Well first you need a computer capable or recording and some kind of audio interface. (I'm assuming the Toneport is a USB Audio interface?) YOu also need a recording program. (Pro Tools is most popular, I'm using Sonar)You really only need a mixer if you are going to be mic'ing the drums, which you said you're not, so that wouldn't be needed. A MIDI Keyboard is only needed if you are going to be triggering MIDI software.

Yeah, the toneport is USB Audio Interface... And when it comes to recording program I really don't care :p I only care if it's cheap and easy to make things sound good :)
Yeah, but just when I posted I figured out that a mixer is cheap (if you buy stuff like Behringer) and if you record, you probably wanna record drums, so even if I won't be buying the mics for recording drums I still want to have the possibility to record them :)

Honestly, you don't need much. My setup costs under $200 CDN and it sounds pretty good.
I have an external soundcard (Creative Labs 24-Live) and a Shure SM57 mic.
Make sure your computer has enough harddrive space and RAM to be able to run these recording programs (Pro Tools, Nuendo, Cool Edit - which is what I use) properly. Once you layer on 4 or 5 tracks, it'll really bog your computer down.
Not that I'm telling you to do this... but if you want to save money, some of these recording programs are availible online... and for free....
Hear my recordings here (http://www.myspace.com/signsofdrowning). Only the song "Pushing Through" is my home recording.
I use Audacity. It's free and you can get it on download.com
