What are some cheap ways I can record with my computer? I need some sorta device that plugs into my computer and software. Can you buy packaged deals? Can somebody recommend something that they use and not something you wish you had or only read about. Thanx.

You need a recording interface. It plugs into your computer via Firewire, USB, PCI, or PCMCIA and you plug a mic into it.
I use the Presonus Firebox, which is a Firewire interface. You need a Firewire port to use it. It has two mic inputs and sends the audio into whatever program your using. I use Sonar personally, and both work great together.
There a lot of choices with software. I'm pretty sure that even free programs like Audacity and Krystal would work.
In order to make better recommendations, I need to know more about your situation. What kind of stuff are you going to be recording? A full band? just guitar riffs? Acoustics and vocals?

I was just going to record myself: guitar riffs, vocals, noise.
So I want something that has guitar input. Maybe mic and left right audio inputs so I can run my 4-track into it.
Right now I use a tascam 4-track. So I just want something along the same line that I can expand with. I just thought maybe I would have more options with the software. For explain: more than four tracks, drum machine, digital modeling, and whatever else.
Sounds like AprilSky is pretty content with the Firebox from Presonus (which I'm ordering shortly). The Firebox also has unbalanced ins so you could plug your 4 track into it. The Firebox comes packaged with Cubase LE. I currently use Cubase SX and the only difference really is just some bells and whistles. It's a fairly easy program to use. Best of all the Firebox is 299. I'm currently using the M-Audio 2496 interface. It certainly has served it's purpose for me. I run my VS 890 into it via SPDIF. It also has 2 RCA ins, 2 RCA outs and midi in/outs. I think it runs about 99.99 (?). It doesn't come with any recording software though. Hope this helps.

I'm currently researching what I need to build a good home studio, and I found this link to be very useful, albeit a little out of date. I hope it helps you.

I'm actually planning on selling my Pro Tools MBox right now to move to an all in one recorder (Yamaha AWg1600)... Its a great setup with didicated guitar inputs, great effects (Amplitude) and a bunch of plug-ins. Its good stuff, I just realized that I hate dealing with computers when it comes to guitars. Lemme know if anyone is interested.

I'd recommend one of these:
http://line6.com/toneport/overview.html
The basic unit is $130 and the one with the VU meters is $200. It has pretty much everything you need to record, 1/4 inch and XLR inputs, phantom power, headphone out, and it comes with Ableton Live recording software, including drum loops. The Gearbox software has guitar and bass amp models and vocal preamps, and a ton of FX. I think it's an amazing value for the price. One thing however, the number of tracks is limited to four if you're using a laptop due to available processing power.
