View Full Version : modding/building triumphs/failures?
i dont know if this really fits in the "repair" section, but theres not much in this section to begin with...........anyway, i was wondering if anyone had any good stories of success or failure when they were building or modifying any equipment? i know that this past summer, i pretty much made a totally different guitar out of my old Jackson Dinky. it was at the time totally stock, and i gave it a totally new yellow finish, a dimarzio super distortion in the bridge and a seymour duncan buckshot in the neck, and i even went to the trouble to get new pots for the volume and tone, and i put a flloyd rose system on it, which was not a simple task. it was my first try at something like this, and all in all it came out pretty decent. so what about you guys?

I'm planning on redoing at least part if not all of the electronics on one of my Strats. Does anyone have any suggestions/stories?

I just finished making my first patch cable. After looking at prices for a six inch patch cable (thirteen USD!!) I was convinced I could make better ones myself anyway.. I got four foot of instrument cable, 47c/ft, and four straight 1/4" plugs. Like I said, I just finished making a little ~6 inch patch for my pedals, and I plan on making more soon.. altho the supplies they sell at Sam Ash aren't great.. I think I'll check out an electronics catalog or something.

if your asking for pickup advice, dimarzio HS-2' are supposed to be really nice, and hum canceling if i ever get a nice standard strat it's going to have stacked pickups i can't stand single coils

ok i have a red tele squire from mexico, and a squire stagemaster HSS with floyd from china
tele - made my own pickguard with plexi glass for $3 and put some chrome tape on it to make it look like a mirror/chromeish, got a dimarzio fast track 2 for the bridge and a seymour lil screamin deamon for the neck, new 500k pots, and put in a nice 3 way switch that wirred for bridge series with it's self/bridge&neck split coil from each in series/neck series with it's self.
Stagemaster - ok did the same thing with the pickgurd, made my own chrome/mirror one. put an emg 85 in the bridge, and a dimarzio fast track 1 in the neck, had to throw in a pre amp booster hooked up to the fs-1 to get it to level with the emg cause of the 25k tone and vol pots. took the floyd completely apart and sharpened the contact points on the bridge with a mini file. scalloped the entire neck myself, aparantly it's a really deep scallop, i went deep enough to get rid of all the inlays, sanded with 600 grid and i'm just now putting the last coats of linseed oil on the back and fretboard. i stripped the locking nuts a whilte back so had to buy some bigger screws and retap the threads on the nut.
:) course i would never do any of this if they were american standard strats or high quality equivalents.

I have a buddy who owned a '57 les paul reissue and really didn't know what he had. (his dad got it for his graduation gift). He was a big Malmsteen fan and heard that he scalloped his frets. So. he did the samt to his les paul and ruined the neck. On top of that he tried to put a bigsby on it as well. He, did it himself and didn't get advice on if he should do it or not. He still has this guitar and is just sits in its case and collects dust.
OUCH!!!!!!!!!!
