does anyone know how to get a whine when you bend the string???
i'm trying it on an echo-reverb effect.and it only works sometimes.........and i can't seem to get the G-string to whine.
any ideas???
i'm not quite sure if this would be the right forum to put it in. but I guess that i'll find out...

What do you mean exactly?
A lot of the noises from bent strings and sustained notes in general comes from the harmonics and type of clipping in your gain.
Like in the beginning of Sober by Tool, there is some short delay, but a lot of it is just the nature of the gain and the unison bend resolving to the true fretted pitches. You can bring out some of the nature of the sustain with a touch of reverb or slapback, probably.
Also, maybe try out some different types of gain boxes or sources. An Ibanez Tubescreamer will have a different sort of clipping than a Rat, for example. The "grit" as I kind of call it, will react differently between the two boxed.
Unless you're talking pinch harmonics or something else. Which is a much different idea. And I probably looked a bit silly.

ok maybe this will clear things up for the both of us...
when i bend the G-string up to make the pitch... i halfway stop it to get a screach, whine, or both.... but lately i can't seem to get it...i can do it with the E and the B string fine..but not G...........
and that's my favorite pitch...

ummmmmm........well i forgot what the name of it was .........but if you listen to Ozzy Osbourne's album No More Tears...(the Guitar parts are done by Zakk Wylde on this disc....)
song #9..
near the end of the session in the beginning of the song....their is a pitch in there......... i about died when i heard it.......it is low and high at the same time..no electronics no nothing........it's weird.........but it's awesome.............so if you've heard the pitch im talking about you'll understand............it's just there....
it lasts a long time before dying...i can't keep mine that long.

Well, I think you're talkin about a pinch harmonic. There are numerous threads about it, so I'm not gonna try and explain how to do them. Just search for pinch harmonic. Zakk calls em "pings." And to get them to last longer, just add vibrato by bending the string back and forth a lot.

I hold my pick so that my nail on my index finger will hit the string, then the tip of the pick, but then the flesh of my thumb, right on the tip, the corner of your thumbnail, and then just vibrato. The trick is to do it quick, so the nail lines you up, the pick hits, and the thumb gets the ring.
Make sure you are hitting the interval, like an octave above the note your hitting, imagine the fretboard just continues to the bridge, and play off those nodes just like natural harmonics.
If none of that made sense, just tell me, and I'll try to get my thoughts together more.

That will get you started. That's the article that got me doing them at first.
It's all about finding the right location on the string to do it.

Yeah man I know exactly what you're talking about, I remember watching and listening and reading anything Zakk Wylde, wondering how the heck I could do that. Just trying knocking your fingernail on the string til you find the node that sounds good, and then remember where it is and go at it.

Like others have said, I'm pretty sure you're talking about pinch harmonics. There's a fair few articles around on the net, and I know I've seen some basic info here on GuitarGeek.com too, search for 'pinch harmonics'. Otherwise, cyberfret.com usually has some decent tutorials.
Give a listen to some Killswitch Engage too, I love the insane bends those boys throw in their squeals! :D
Good luck :)
