hey, i am plenty proud of my rig (see below). that said, i break a ton of strings. basically, i flat out murder my equipment when i play. so, at this point i am looking to get a "good enough bass" to be used as a backup in case of an emergency live. my tone is very treblely under a ton of distortion and noise (see homepage for sounds). thus, i really have no use for any bass that can't quite handle the pressure. on top of that, i have a total of $400 to spend. hmmm, any recommendations?

oh, and i am a die hard fender fan and really hate most other brands (exceptions include musicman and dan electro), so that's kinda the feeling i am looking for.

thanks for your time,
kevin

Since no one's replied yet...

I have a Squier Affinity P-bass that, believe it or not, I like a lot  .

Squiers seem to be built pretty well--I've jumped around with mine, hit things with it, dropped it on tile floors, taken it apart, beat it, etc. I replaced the bridge with a Badass II. Anyway, I think it sounds good--very Fender-y. It doesn't feel quite as nice as a Fender, but it still feels and sounds pretty good.

If I were you I'd get a Squier jazz bass and maybe replace the pickups if you don't like their sound.

why not get a mexican fender? 400 for the standard. i'd consider a mexican fender a GEB... in fact i'm thinking about one myself.
