Anyone have advice for a bassist who's considering a truss rod adjustment for the first time? I have a mexi Fender Jazz and i get a solid buzz out of the first four frets on any string. This almost makes the bass unplayable, but it's kida expected out of a Mexi i've abused for 4 years. I don't just want to jump in there and start cranking on the neck though, so if anyone has any advice or pointers, i'd appreciate it!

i'd say to get some help with someone who's done it before. it's a very nervewracking process to do a truss rod adjustment on your own, and it's very difficult to have the patience it requires. just ask around (to i dunno....maybe your ROOMMATE!:D ) and see if anyone you know has done it before and ask them to be there with you.

I honestly dont know why you didn't just ask me, I'm in the room right next door to you.

it's very important not to do more than a quarter turn (hehehe laughing because I do a full at a time.) Really though, do a quarter turn.. let the bass sit a bit (or guitar), test it. see if you're on the right track.

***DO NOT FORCE THE TRUSS ROD.*** You can seriously damage your neck. Having said that, it's great to know how to do this adjustment and a little dab'll do yah usually.

Sound's like you do not have enough of a bow in it. Probably need to go counter clockwise. if you have done a couple of adjustments and it's getting worse buzz, go the other way and see if the buzz goes away.

On my guitars I usually hold the string down at the first and 15 or 17th fret and see. If there is plenty of space or conversely, no space with buzzing... I adjust. And a little is usally enough. on mine 1 to 1 1/2 turns is usally enough.. sometimes a 1/2 turn.

thanks alot Barfly, that info really helps. Not like Alex's input, but i know he's gonna help me when it comes time to do it anyway. I just wanted a second opinion. Especially from someone that doesn't call me a Dweeb (long-running joke in our apartment, don't be offended if he ever calls you a bricks-for-brains)

ALSO it's good to see at least SOME people are still using the bass forums!

Thanks again.
