A Big Muff is proberly the most popular pedal for bass because it sounds so awesome it's unbelievable. Don't bother with the boss overdrive. Any overdrive/distortion pedal works on bass anyhow.

I'm a big fan of the TS-9 for bass.

On the contrary, DO bother with it. I had one, playing that thing through a stack made me want to wet my pants :) I have yet to try the Muff but recordings I've heard of it on bass sound weak and fuzzy at best, but I guess if that's your thing then go for it.

Definitely try before you buy, though, people have different tastes. Don't let anyone tell you a certain pedal isn't worth checking out, especially something like the ODB-3.

get both, i did! (check my rig below), you find use for them both

the muff just stays the muff but the ODB can't do a fuzz very good but can do much more, like rithem guitar on bass (motorhead) or a very nasty punk bass. I also use the boss when i play on transistor amps instead of the Muff (like festivals) because the muff only works well on a tube amp (overdrive the tubes with it)

i'd say explore other realms. the shredmaster is really great on bass, it never really did it for me on guitar but then i tried it out on bass and loved it.
the best bass distortion i've ever used is a DOD bass grunge. it was absolutely beautiful and sweet and crunchy. however, i quit the band and it belonged to the singer, and i haven't come across another one. but if you get a chance, definitely go for it.

edit: there are two bass grunges on ebay for very cheap. but be advised that it is likely that you will be bidding against me.

I'm trying to build up my pedal board right now and on the OD/Dist. side of things I'm looing at getting a Big Muff and either a Budda Phatbass or a Fulltone Bassdrive. The Big Muff is great but it doesn't do everything you might want to consider getting the big muff for that sound and another pedal to cover the rest. Both the Fulltone and the Budda are amazing pedals, I'd recomend taking a look at them but they aren't cheap. Beyond that I wasn't particularily impressed by the ODB-3 but that's me if you like it than great, it's alot cheaper than the alternatives.

hells yeah, I HAVE been thinking about that, although just using bass overdrive to power up... as in: volume and use Big Muff to make the dist. i want, or the other way ;)

that ibanez tone lok series has a pretty good sounding bass od / dist.

i had been using a russian big muff pi on my bass up until pretty recently. i've since replaced it with my t-rex mudhoney (my guitar and bass rig are sorta interchangable) and been really pleased. itcan be quite sick sounding, but also offer a more subdued gritty sound when the gain is backed off.

the boss sounds pretty wicked, but i've heard some good things about the line6 distortion modeler when used with bass.

i don't know much about bass, or effects or even music for that matter, but i plugged my bass into my boss blues-driver with the tone turn all the way to the left and the gain about halfway and i thought it sounded pretty darn good. thank you, that is all.

i have recently recorded with mine (russian big muff). i used to be hot and cold with my big muff but after the live recording session (two slightly dirty guitars, drummer and myself) that i used the big muff on, it will never leave my rig again.

after the advise i found in the bass effects forum on these pages, i dialled all the knobs to one o'clock. the tone was off the hook. absolutely massive.

but you've got to be keen to use be getting fuzz out of it. i mean that's what it's built for. if you're looking for more of an overdrive sound, my advise is to not listen to me at all.
