hey guys,
im recording a demo for a friends band on friday and i was looking for some advice.
iv an mbox2, 4ch mixer, 2dynamic mics and 2 condenser mics.
i was wondering how would i mic the drum kit, dynamic on kick and snare, one condenser overhead and one out front?
dynamic on either side of kick?
what do ye think is the best way for this, iv only a few hours to record em so time isnt on my side for trying em all out.

plus they play metal so just simple kick snare mightn't work.

any tips will do

There are a few different ways you could do it depending on exactly what kind of sound you're going for, how many cymbals the drummer has, how his snare sounds, how hard he hits (and how hard he hits what), etc. (If the drummer's snare is not as high-end-y or punk-y, you might be able to get away with no snare mic, but if it's on the tinnier side it's going to get washed out by the cymbals). Here's a couple conventional possibilities; if you wanna get weird and experimental, that should be your invention/ideas, not mine.

1. A dynamic on the kick (this is going to be constant; they are a metal band after all), a dynamic on the snare, stereo overhead condensers (keep the overheads relatively low).

2. A dynamic on the kick, a dynamic on the snare, a single overhead centerd just above the drummer's head (if you click on the www link below my sig, that's how those drums were recorded. When you don't have much equipment, simpler is often better).

3. A dynamic on the kick, a dynamic on the snare or hi-hat (depending on which one needs just a little reinforcement with the condensers in this position), two condensers (in stereo, panned appropriately) somewhere between drummer's head/ear and shoulder level and just far enough away (sideways) from the drummer's ears to not get in the way.
