Who's getting great guitar sounds going direct into the board/sound card? What are you using?
I do a fair bit of tracking with a Palmer PGA-04 (http://www.palmergear.com/pga04.shtml) unit. We can do a "can you spot the mic'ed cab" comparison if anyone doubts you can get a fine sound with these.

You can get great DI sound with almost anything if you work through a couple 10+band EQ's. Or a nice EQ paired with a crossover. Makes a great mic/speaker sim for under $200.

I've gotten good tones from different digital multieffects (Digitech RP-100, RP-250, Scot Ian Black-13) straight into the board, and I've had good results from my Tech21 Trademark 10 and Behringer GDI-21 (their copy of the SansAmp GT-2). Combine either of those with a decent distortion pedal and an EQ, slap a little (and I do mean a "little") reverb on there and cut some of the bass to avoid too much low end thump when you palm mute (preferably, as far down the chain as you can), and there you go.
It's a lot easier to get decent DI sounds when you're not trying to go for a typical guitar tone, though. It's perfect for ambient stuff or anything where you don't really want it to sound quite like a guitar.
