I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on tracking guitars. Particularly with two amps going at once. (ie. Mesa dual rec and fender deville simutaneously)

any input would be helpful

Thanks

I've never tracked two amps at once but I do re-amp from time to time. I run guitar -> Radial DI and then DI balance output -> board and DI unbalanced out -> amp. I mic the amp (actually I run a Palmer unit on the amp). Play and record. When I'm done I have two tracks: the mic'ed amp track and the DI balanced output track of my performance. To record the second amp I play back the DI balanced track and run that track into the balanced output on the Radial DI and then run the unbalanced input into the input on the other amp. That amp is mic'ed and being recorded while the DI'd tracked is played back.

Repeat ad nauseum.

I like to track an overdriven rhythm and then re-amp with a clean amp and mix them together. I'll also mic the guitar when I'm tracking. Lets me add a faux acoustic to the mix really easily. As long as you don't push it up too loud it's very convincing.

+1 on iaresee's suggestion. Re-amping is a great way to go. Radial not only makes great DI boxes, but all kinds of other useful gadgets for recording guitars, using multiple amps, etc.

If you're going to track with 2 amps, just try to get as much isolation between them as possible and let her rip. As far as the technical details (mic selection/placement, etc.) Try as many different things as possible. Ignore all time honored traditions and go with what sounds best to you.
