View Full Version : no structure
i think songs without structure are more fun to play. i listen to an equal amount of music with and without structure. i don't really know why i started this thread but i didn't see any like it. well uh, someone please comment. i would like to talk about this.

i have a song that doesn't have a structure... kinda...
it's just the same chords over and over again... and i sing... no real chorus or anything like that.
but it works nicely. i think. *g*

By no structure, do you mean NOT "verse chorus verse bridge double chorus"? (ABABCBB)
IE, when a band like Tool goes verse chorus verse chorus bridge bridge2 bridge3 bridge4 bridge5 bridge6, (ABABCDEFG) does that count as no structure?
Cause I looooooooove prog stuff like the second example, but I can't really handle songs that just ramble on.
what i mean by no structure is - get your structure handbook out of your head, everything you've learned about song structure, and throw it right out the window. like verse1 verse2 verse3 verse4 verse5
listen to don caballero or black dice. you'll see. but really try to check out don caballero. amazing guitar work, mostly two hand tapping, not like evh but nore like playing two riffs at once, and also possibly the best drummer of the 90's.

I know what you mean, my band that I have now, the songs we are making I try not to fall into that verse chorus stuff, we have only made like two songs, we have only been together like a month, but I don't want our songs to follow that pattern, I don't want them to be predictable. So I throw in solos, not at the usual time of like 3/4 through the song, but like whenever it will sound good, or not even have a solo, or maybe songs not have a chorus or whatever, just make it not like every other song.
I like music that's really continuous and has structure that isn't apparent. Some jazz and electronica is like that.. I mean, jazz has structure obviously, but if I listen to it without concentrating then it's just a blur. I can just sink into it without having to absorb repeating song elements like choruses and verses. It's very relaxing.
i have an improv/prog band called pity this busy monster, manunkind.

John Cage is the master of chaos within a structured order.

That's the stricktest form of structure, the canon.

Pretty much all the metalcore bands out there today have no structure but they all have that breakdown toward the end lol

try listening to avante garde music... way weird.
or listen to some frank zappa songs... it has structure but he uses odd time sigantures so somebody who's been listening to 4/4 all his life would think it was a little chaotic.
hot holy hell emthree. you have volta do mar listed in your profile.
i thought i was alone in the knowledge of such a skilled group of musicians.
ya volta do mar kicks out the jams like no other. the 2 bassists can harmonize so good. they just make everything work like magic. gotta love that drummer. that guy can keep some serious time and rip on his kit. and oh ya, it must be a rough job for the guitarist to lay his stuff over all of those melodies from the bassists. its like simultaneously listening to 3 songs in the same key and bpm. they're structural geniouses.

One of the two songs in the site I link to in my sig has no real structure. It doesn't really have a clear sense of rhythm too, it all sort of becomes a blur of melodies popping in and out, and then towards the end I add in some distortion to make what I'm playing stand out from the loop. And the other one has a really strict structure of just two chords over and over with melodic variations on them (I was playing rhythm and lead at the same time, something I'm a big fan of).
