To preempt a most underrated players thread, I though we might get who is a rated player out of the way first.
I'll start by putting in ten nominations for some of the most generally accepted great players:
Paul McCartney
Jaco Pastorius
Chuck Rainey
Carol Kaye
Geddy Lee
John Entwhistle
Stanley Clark
James Jameson
Flea
Bootsy Collins

Seriously, will we keep doing threads like this? there are a lot of really good players, its sooo subjective....
With that said, what about Les Claypool, John Entwistle or Victor Wooten?
They all are great equally, there isn't a winner really.

They all are great equally, there isn't a winner really. Unless they overlap why not? It may be subjective but it can open up people's eyes to music that they might otherwise have ignored. Given that the Bass tends to be overlooked in any case it makes this even more salient.
So yes we are going to keep doing it.
John Entwhistle was already on my list of nominations:rolleyes:
What has Les Claypool or Victor Wooten done that I should listen to in the context of greatest player ever?

Well, that's easy
If you appreciate what people like EVH or Steve Vai have done for electric guitar technically, you should thank Wooten for his bass explorations.
And what can I say about Claypool? the man is just a creative Monster (with capital M), I just can't explain his style, you should check it yourself.
Besides, if he managed Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland to (Oysterhead) to play with him that means he must be good.

Paul McCartney- Nope, He's a good Songwriter, but not one of the best Bassists ever.
Jaco Pastorius
Chuck Rainey-?
Carol Kaye- She had some Good Songs...
Geddy Lee- Good Pick.
John Entwhistle
Stanley Clark- Good Pick
James Jameson- I don't get this one, He's not that badass
Flea- Yes. Simply Yes.
Bootsy Collins- Of Course, The Man Himself. He plays funkier than any other living human, keeps the beat and at the same time Out solos any Guitarist...
Les- The Man has invented more ways to play the Bass than almost anyone, he's easily the best in the world right now. The Man not only rapes the Bass, but he sings while he does it!
Victor Wooden- Damn Straight, He's got it.
Some I might Add:
Aston "Family Man" Barrett (Bob Marley and the Wailers)
Larry Graham (Sly and the Family Stone)- Created the Most Important Bass Technique, Slap Bass. Plus he kicked it with Sly Stone!
Billy Cox (Band Of Gypsys)- Have you heard Band of Gypsys? Good Bass, and he was able to hang with Hendrix... (Better than McCartney atleast.)
John Paul Jones(Zeppellin).

Armistead Burwell Smith IV aka Zack Smith from Three Mile Pilot/Pinback/Rob Crow etc.
I am more of a three mile pilot fan than the rest of his projects, but he is undeniably good.

Paul McCartney has been listed as a key influence by too many bass players to mention, many of whom appear here.
Chuck Rainey is the bass player that appears on most Steely Dan records and is worth listening too.
James Jameson (In a similar manner to Paul McCartney, but not for Funk) is listed as a key influence by almost every funk and R&B bass player.
Yes I've heard of Band of Gypsys. I wouldn't however rate Billy Cox or John Paul Jones beyond the players I already nominated. Not that they don't have many great qualities as bass players.
I would have put Willie Dixon on the list but he is more prominent as a song writer/producer.
Anyway it was only my list of nominations. As I mentioned before it is really about filling in any blanks and finding out new stuff. It is at the very best largely subjective anyway.

IMO, nothing.
I think that the best bass players never really stand out (other than guys like Entwistle but he stood out in his own way).
